there is a very good flashfood box at the grocery store, but I’d need to pick it up tomorrow or saturday, and tomorrow is expected to be -10, and saturday we are picking up the interim kitchen table and a flashfood order from another grocery store of frozen proteins. so much as it pains me, I probably won’t.

there is a sale this week at the local butchers that we have a gift certificate for from MIL, so I might also add that to saturday’s travel plans (a straight shot on the streetcar from the existing flash food order), and use that for our friend meal next week

Today is a planned eat out day. We have a gift card to a local fast food joint. We’ll be using that.

Tomorrow is a take out meal fundraiser for a community organization. They’re cooking Fish Chowder and Hamburger Soup. We’ve bought Fish Chowder and will pick it up at noon. We’ll store it in the fridge for supper.

said gift certificate is from Dec 2024. Oops. We’ve just had such good luck with flashfood, we are a full year behind (she gave us another set for this past holiday)

I cooked some white beans and threw them in the freezer for when I have time to turn them into something.

Haven’t touched the lentils yet. I don’t really like them but they are cheap protein.

Yesterday I hit up the food pantry and got some bread, broth, and beans! (the three Bs, haha) All things we use a lot. That felt good.

Later I want to check out a salvage grocery store. There’s one in our area but it’s not that close. It’ll be an adventure for Toddler and me.

I have also been cooking lots of dry beans in the instant pot and then putting them in the freezer. Many servings of chickpeas and pinto beans waiting for use.

$124.07 on food groceries today. That’s discounting a bag of precooked chicken breast that had clearly thawed and refrozen because it was a solid block. I’ve already requested and gotten a refund for it. But now I have no precooked chicken for after surgery.

Still reviewing and planning every morning after breakfast. This is definitely helping me manage use by dates better and if it’s a soup day I get it started early so it’s ready for lunch. No food waste this week!

I want this to be a habit and so far it’s ticking all the boxes that I usually need for a new habit.

the very good box was still available at noon today, and we still had time on our transit passes from bringing home the interim kitchen table, so the shadowy one went and picked it up.

$5.45
4 bell peppers
4 mini cucumbers
3 lemons
2 avocado
1 opo squash
1 passion fruit
1 grapefruit
1 large mango
small handful cherry tomatoes
4 very sad peaches, resulting in 1 cup of chopped fruit

I finished prepping the lentils and the veggies! I can just eat through the leftovers until my next CSA box arrives this coming Friday. Yesterday I went to Aldi to get some pantry and frozen items that will help stretch the last of the lentils and veg.

Still have not reorganized the pantry, but I’ll have plenty of time to do that next week.

Hubby went to the store to pick up my meds…and came home with them…and Double Chocolate Brownies! :disappointed:. The last thing we need to be eating with our health is Double Chocolate Brownies!

I still think we’ll be under $600 in grocery expenses this month.

Grocery total savings less impressive this week BUT I still spent under $100 :dancer::man_dancing:

We’re actually doing really well on Pantry Survivor Island but it largely has to do with aaron’s efforts, not mine. Every dinner has included something from the pantry!

We did have to purchase canola oil, which was a staple that ran out like day 2, but that’s our exception.

I’ve emptied one more box from the pantry, of Larabars. I haven’t actually eaten the last Larabar but if I don’t today it will probably take up residence in my purse for the next time I suddenly need calories.

My mom just gave us a bunch of canned food that is going to be hard to find space to store… but it will save us money at least!

I should just need some fresh veg, fruit and meat this week and next week. I have ordered some pre-made meals, to arrive Friday.

Everyone’s been taking a packed lunch most days and bought lunches are down to 1 a week, so i think I have enough information about what each person likes to put together a menu and some “lunch recipes” so the kids know what to fill their lunchboxes with. Huge improvement for everyone!

I sat down and did a bit of meal planning this morning. Having an appropriate interim table at the kitchen nook is already helping me out.

~$11 in grocery this week (didn’t keep receipt and I just got home so the total won’t post for a day or two, but it’s at least close).

As far as using up the pantry:
Meals for myself this week are 5(ish, I had several 1/4 cup amounts left of different dried types) bean chili that also used up an onion/couple peppers/random jar of diced tomatoes.

Chicken+last of other vegetables (eggplant, carrots, celery) going with a frozen pie crust and can of cream-of-something to make a pot pie for a friend who took a fall…not broken-bone serious, but they still aren’t interested in doing a lot of moving for a few days.
