Also… I know it’s the wrong thread but my cat is cute and has good hair.

This is the answer I got. Does it make sense? I don’t think it totally addressed the question of my charcoal roots, but I think I should just wait a week or so and wash it a bunch of times and see what happens. I bought expensive color shampoo and conditioner from her yesterday but this morning I used my standard cheaper stuff hoping to fade the toner and get my white bits back quicker. I really loved my white bits and I think that’s what I am the saddest about, so the sooner they come back the happier I will be. Of course, not being a hairdresser myself, I’m not sure what’s physically possible to do while keeping hair healthy and not turning it green or something.

My coworker said that most of my growth was dark brown and the charcoal gray was basically only in my part so that’s what I saw. Looking at it myself I knew the back was dark brown but I thought the top and sides above my ears was charcoal and white. But no matter what’s underneath and which I honestly don’t care about, the roots at my part are going to grow out charcoal and white again and be visible. My coworker also said that it is overall not as light as I think, still a level 5-6 like I always used, maybe she can take pictures later.

Should’ve just left it alone and used root spray for the next 2 years. And perhaps that’s the answer from now on since the faded red is gone? I’m not sure more toner is the answer and I do not want my whites toned again.

Yes I think you want toner, that will just remove any brown/red/ orange tones to color she has added or the bottom half of your hair. It won’t do much to your gray or Charcoal because there aren’t any of those tones in there to…. Tone if that makes sense ? Does that help at all?

Purple shampoo is basically super weak toner

Tone to get cool /ashy shades (coolest and ashiet is grey/white) and remove warmth (brown red orange)

Also any deposited color (separate thing from toner) washes out of grey super quickly

I know nothing about coloring hair, but on a high level: she did something and it’s done, you can’t change that. It sounds like she has a plan and that your hair will continue to change this week. It wouldn’t hurt to progress with the plan and see what happens?

I find that I am always shocked and upset and second-guessing my choices when I get a new paint color, even though it’s what I picked out and end up loving after I have time with it. But my brain does not like change. Maybe there’s a little of that as well?

I hope you end up with a result that you like, I’m sorry that this has turned out to be so stressful for you!

I think her answer is shit and I wouldn’t let her touch it again. It doesn’t seem like she has the communication or technical skills. Imagine if she’d said “we can do something similar but yours will look more brown than charcoal and the first appointment might look like just warm brown high and low lights” Because she’s now implying that was her plan

Take all your pictures and videos and go on the sally beauty website chat and buy products from them. Probably semi permanent but maybe demi. Then use semi permanent to blend for a few months maybe?

Is there a thread for makeup or nail polish? I couldn’t find it, so I am going to ask here.

Can anyone recommend some not-crazy-expensive (but doesn’t have to be the cheapest) nail polish? I am looking for medium-to-dark purple sparkly or iridescent. Do I need separate base coat? Top coat? Do I need to do something about my cuticles too?

Listen, I have not used nail polish since probably high school (lol), so it’s been a minute. Help.

I really like both Essie and OPI for good coverage/color/lasting power. They will definitely have purple sparkly iridescent, and you can find them in your average Walgreens.

I use both base and top coat but I don’t think it’s essential. I just think it helps with longevity for me.

Cuticles – I push mine back with my nail, that’s it.

I like OPI too, and typically find it used at nail salons. It’s about $9-$10 / bottle last I looked. Might be on sale for Amazon Prime days (going on now)?

You don’t have to do anything for your cuticles, but I somehow received a bottle of cuticle oil (Essie brand) and it’s so luxurious to paint it on my cuticles and push them back then. I tend to have very dry hands so my cuticles are a mess.

Is anyone using a gentle cleanser right now that they are really liking? I feel like cleanser is consistently the product in my routine that I’m never stoked about. I’ve been using neutrogena hydroboost for a while now, and I feel like it’s just too drying in my current routine with nightly retinol and almost daily azaleic acid.

I’m using the skinfix gel, but switching to cream for winter

Cetaphil - it is somewhat moisturizing, though likely not sufficient for your area . Definitely not drying!

I live in a very dry climate and I have always washed my face with Dove bar soap!

ETA: I only wash my face once a day, in the shower at night. In the morning I just use a wet wash cloth.

Cetaphil here too!

I am dry as hell and love the Tatcha rice cleanser.

I have sensitive skin and the Cetaphil doesn’t work for me but I do like Vanicream (cheap drugstore brand) cleanser.

this is harrowing to admit, but my favorite cleanser is $49 a tube. it’s from lisa eldridge, and it’s so nice on my aging dry skin that i often don’t even need moisturizer afterwards.

i have only bought one tube and i use a couple times a week, alternating with cheaper brands, but it’s so nice. the tube i bought has lasted me more than a year.

I’ve read about this one! It has a lot of great reviews, I wish it was slightly less pricey for a cleanser lol

@Rosie are you using the vanicream gentle cleanser?

Wow this cleanser sounds so good. I went down a reddit rabbit hole about it, lol. I don’t know if I’m ready to spend $50 on cleanser, but I get the appeal!
