i would suggest some kind of lightweight gel or mousse. i use a product called “i create volume” but my hair is very different from yours. anything with “curl-defining” in the name is worth a look.
put the product in when your hair is wet and then do not touch it. this is more important than the product you use. brushing is usually what turns curls to frizz.
you could also consider getting a layered cut to blend the pieces close to your face with the rest of your hair. a layered cut can help keep a nice shape.
maybe try googling for a youtube video for low maintenance curly girl hair routines ? there will be good suggestions for you in those!
The easiest will be to use a wide tooth comb in the shower and at the end of the shower use a tiny bit of conditioner without rinsing. Then air dry. If you need to brush it daily (I do cause I’m wavy) then use the comb and run curl creme or leave in conditioner after.
yes! wavy is just curly lite my hair is also wavy, but i need product to hang on to the wave.
i put my product in, then put my hair up in a bun for a day, and then i have really nice waves for a few days after that. i sleep in a bun and don’t brush until my hair starts to look ratty, at which point i brush and wash, or sometimes i spray it with hair story “undressed” spray and put it back in a bun for awhile to refresh the waves. i use a little dry shampoo when my bangs look like they need it. i am very lazy hair-wise and this + a great cut has given me the best hair of my life!
Some advice I have seen for curly hair is to never use shampoo, but to use conditioner only.
I don’t know if it is still around, but a friend used to use Infusium 23 leave in conditioner. It is very light and watery, and it helped control her curls / waves.
Maybe a weird offer but I have a good amount of curly-hair, no-frizz products. You are welcome to try them! I could make you little sample sizes or something.
Personally, I try not to brush my hair when dry. That’s frizz city for me. I brush it out before I get in the shower, but that’s kind of it. Even wet, I usually only run my fingers through it, and that’s because I’m putting some anti-frizz product in it. Leave in conditioners are also helpful. But I couldn’t not use shampoo, that would not work for me. I feel like that would leave me with greasy roots and no help for the frizzies in the rest of it.
I am also pretty damn lazy about hair styling. I could not make myself do a whole blow drying and curling routine that I guess is standard for some. Can we believe influencers? I don’t know. Now that I have bangs, I do blow those out because I want them straight, but it takes like 60 seconds top. I do not have the patience do the rest of my head. So, something like this or this worked into my wet hair with my fingers and a little scrunching it up for good measure, blow out the bangs, and let it air dry. If there’s time, maybe a little hair spray which I also use to combat frizzies more than to keep hair in place. My hair laughs at the idea that it would ever stay in place!
I also have wavy/curly hair. If my hair is long, it’s more on the wavy side and when I have it shorter (as in, too short to pull back in a pony tail), they are more like curls. I agree with others that brushing hair while it is dry is the worst for causing frizz.
I also use a wide tooth comb on my hair (after I apply the conditioner, and before I rinse it out). Then, I put on a silicone-free gel and let my hair dry without touching it. When my hair is completely dry, it has a hard gel cast, and I take my fingers and scrunch the hair until it is soft again (in the curly girl method, this is called scrunch out the crunch). I sleep in a silk bonnet and/or on a silk pillowcase which also really helps with the reducing frizz.
A certain amount of frizz can still happen, but these actions really help it out.
I am newly in the middle ground between wavy and curly hair and it seems to be trending curly as I get older. In addition to the above about no dry brushing, I would maybe experiment with what my friend called ‘organizing the curls’.
I keep my hair super long and it’s very fine so after washing/conditioning, I comb it out a bit wet, enough that it’s all generally headed in the same direction, and the twist it pretty firmly into one long rope. I am also unwilling to do extensive time intensive hair routines, but if I keep it twisted a bit while it air dries, just giving it a little twirl to keep it twisted, it makes nice ringlets that last a few days (humidity depending). I think this could also work on smaller hair sections, but don’t twist super tight as it usually makes curls that are too tight and prone to frizz.
I haven’t gotten this to work nicely with a gel application. For that I have to scrunch the gel into very wet hair that is making it’s own waves/ringlets and then hope for the best, again air drying (I can usually get away with scrunching it with a non-terry towel to get a little more water out faster, but all the curly girls are right, it does make it frizz more).
Hellooooo we have similar hair. I like this product—it seems expensive but one bottle lasts me a while. I put it in after I shower. Smells great and hard to over do. I also use a giant shower comb instead of brushing.
I do not but a close friend has similar (but blond) hair. She puts in a lot of conditioner and then her trick is not to ever brush it except for with her fingers. It sounds like a lot of people have already suggested this!
Clarifying question: do you only do this post-wash, or after any shower regardless of whether your hair is wet? (I don’t wash my hair very often)
Also realizing that I forgot to mention I’ve been blow-drying my hair because it weighs like POUNDS and takes forever to dry. It’s only once a week but still. I know I should stop that but it means spending all day or night with wet hair
6 months! Hard to believe it’s been that long, it’s really been easier than I expected. I’ve only recently started being a bit self conscious about the color line I have so I’ve been using root spray to help a little. Of course absolutely nobody has ever said anything negative about it. I’m really loving the white bits at the front. I have an appointment to deal with the terribly faded brown box dye in 2 weeks. I’m probably unreasonably scared of it, fingers crossed it comes out well. My coworker who used to be a hairdresser and knows mine said she is very capable which I assumed to be the case with how long she’s been doing it but doesn’t really help with my nerves.
I’m assuming I will need a few more appointments as that fades which is fine. I’m willing to spend some money on this until it’s all grown out in another year or whatever it takes. I recently sent my hairdresser a couple of videos of someone doing the process I think I need on ladies with very similar roots to mine and she said they were great so hopefully it’s helpful to her.
I will ask my coworker to get better pictures before and after my appointment.
