Skincare

Would love a quick gut check from you all. I’m very fair and do a lot to manage redness. A derm told me I have rosacea prone skin awhile ago.

I was deep into skincare content in 2020ish, and it seemed like the general consensus then was to limit exfoliating as much as possible for rosacea prone skin. I had a consult with a cosmetic NP who told me that now, that’s changed, so services with heavier duty exfoliation are considered to be totally fine for skin like mine.

Would you all consider that directionally true? I’m finally ready to pull the trigger if so.

I have full-blown rosacea and I absolutely do not exfoliate my face. My face does better when I avoid all face products with fragrance, use very gentle products, and very few products in general. Plus I pretty much always wear a sun hat when outside during the day as the sun is a very major trigger for me.

I was hoping you’d weigh in, I know you’ve thought about this a lot! Thanks.

I have moderate rosacea and exfoliation definitely makes it flare up. Was the NP talking about like in-clinic exfoliation like lasers or chemical peels? I might consider something like that since they can more tightly tailor it to your skin’s needs. And also like a peel destroys everyone’s skin and then it is fine again, so maybe it would be the same for rosacea skin :person_shrugging:

Yeah exactly, in office stuff like peels and lasers. That’s a good point that in office might be in a different category than what I’d do at home, so that could be the disconnect.

Maybe. But I suspect they were just trying to upswell you with crap that is not great for you, or they are ignorant. Not mutually exclusive options.

I don’t know if that’s my perception! It was through my regular derm, so I trust them to scoop off moles and tell me if something is wrong with them. I want to see if I want them to be the ones to laser off my age spots too, or if I should go somewhere else.

I went down a big laser rabbit hole a while ago and don’t remember seeing anything about rosacea being a contraindication. Somehow peels seem more excruciating to me, so I haven’t really looked into them.

ETA very interested to hear what your options are / what you decide if you move forward.

Oh, interesting and a good point! I read the Rosacea subreddit and a lot of people talk about stuff like laser treatments there, with varying results by individual.

I have rosacea and I am prescribed ivermectin, spirolactone, and doxycycline for it. The derm has told me I can do exfoliation but prefers it clinic (like laser or chemical) vs anything at home

I have rosacea and the only thing I use to exfoliate at this time is this:

It works crazy well and is the only thing that seems to control flaking for me. It’s kind of expensive but one bottle lasts soooo long. I just got a new one and don’t even remember when I got the last one but I’m sure it was over a year ago. I’m not even sure how it works because there’s nothing “scrubby” in it and it works instantly, not a peel over time like acids.

I have the same one and bought it over 4 years ago! and it’s still more than half full

Yeah, I was thinking about it and I think I have gone through two bottles since the beginning of 2022? So for me averaging every two years, and I use it 1-3x per week. It lasts a long time!

5 months! Getting gnarly over here so I have occasionally used some root spray, and will probably start doing it more often. I feel like I’m going to have a nice white stripe once it’s grown out, I hope that’s true. Overall though, I’m going to end up darker than I expected because the back and underneath are still dark.
