Oh, I’m glad to hear that! At a glance I’ll guess it was run with the bobbin case improperly installed so that metal parts rubbed on each other and caused it to shear. Your photo is looking down through the bobbin area, right?
The photo is looking through the back hole near the wheel. so that crank is the big one
Think I’m confused. Looking down with the machine folded out of the table?
Ah, gotcha now. I use the access holes on the outside to oil in there. Should probably check to be sure it’s all going to the right place.
CalBal, I would totally wear a dress made with that fabric.
Do any of the dresses you like making work with a contrasting panel? If you could do e.g. a contrasting bodice panel + bias tape, that could go a long way to making that fabric go longer.
I like that you have a picture, not that the fork broke. That sucks a lot.
I bought the fabric for the final version of my frock coat! I was waiting for no good reason but it turned out to be fortuitous. Got a 15% off Memorial Day sale price, and then was able to tack on an extra 10% off on top of that with a coupon.
Got thread, lining, outer material, and another 5 yards of muslin for 94$, free shipping.
BOOM.
I ordered fancy horsehair interlining a while back from a different source (etsy person) and that should be arriving soon, too.
The only thing I’m missing is buttons.
What sort of buttons do you envision? You could make buttons.
I fell in love with Too Expensive buttons that I resisted buying because… look I can love a button but good but I’m not going to spend $30 on buttons. I need a total of (6) 1/2" buttons (for cuffs) and (9) 3/4" buttons for the front and pleats in back. It’s a lot of buttons.
The ones I really like are a brassy color with white enamel in the center, 4-holes. I think they’ll suit the light-weather type coat that it is. But since I’m not throwing down $30 for buttons I need to source a cheaper option and that might include letting go of that design desire.
Plastic buttons/ metallic spray paint?
Normally I’d suggest haunting thrift stores for something close to what you want and then altering those (mightbe able to find brass and add a spot of metal paint)…under the circumstances I don’t know the state of your thrift stores, but at least here they’re ‘essential’ and more importantly nearly deserted about half an hour before closing time.
Thrift store would have been my normal suggestion, too, but not now, not for quite some time to come.
It depends on the item and how crowded the store is for me at this point…nearly deserted and looking for a specific item that can be soaked in bleach/disinfectant, that I can deal with. Otherwise no, it’s getting bought new or I’ll do without.
Yeah, it’s not thrift store specifically for me. I’m high risk and not going in any stores.
You are spending a lot of time and effort on perfecting this coat, yes?
Get the nice buttons you want. Or, at least, do not get cheap buttons.
(I came to the conclusion with the amount of time, money, and care I took with my sewing and knitted garments that I didn’t want to cheap out on the notions. I’ve been unhappy with cheap stuff in the past and have ended up spending more in the long run repairing or replacing.)
nods
Plastic buttons are not an answer I’m cool with. The fabric is silk and wool. Plastic will just cheapen the whole thing.
I’m going to try to find other options to make sure I’m making a good choice, but the final buttons will be metal of some sort, or horn/bone.
ETA: but the good thing about buttons is I can dither on them for awhile! I have a long way to go before they are necessary LOL
This is true! You can hold off until you find something you really like and is in your price range!
Oh man, buttons are getting me at the moment. Just the choice, rather than the actual cost at this point, because I’m looking at wooden ones.
Thinking of these ones for the placket on my olive coloured jumper-dress. I should probably order them so I can make the placket before the rest of the dress? I’m not sure of the order of things because I’m altering the pattern.
Also, do I buy a heap and use them on everything? Maybe a few different kinds? Shipping is $5, but if I buy some for skirts and such that I am going to make it’s worth it. Hmmm matching buttons on all my clothes? Or different ones?
