Sewing Thread

I might see if I can essentially add another staple to it. But getting it sewing at least at a hand crank level is step one.
Well no.
Cleaning it is step one. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: And ordering sewing machine oil.

It’s not a bad idea, another staple thing. You might also consider some kind of oil or conditioner for the leather if you do that so it doesn’t just snap in another spot. Saddlesoap would be ideal, but failing that, maybe cooking oil? Shortening/lard?

Oiling it is defo on my list, good reminder.

My memory served correct. Looking up the serial number, my treadle singer sewing machine was manufactured on March 30th, 1910.
That’s fucking wild.

I also confirmed it belonged to my great grandmother, on my paternal side. It then sat in a storage unit for a good 40 years before Great Aunt E died and my dad and his siblings had to go deal with her hoarder level estate. To be fair, the hoarding was of really old antiques? But it was still an issue.

It does explain why the machine had all those parts still, and the “occupied Japan” pinking shears. They literally threw nothing away.

My plan for cleaning is just really gentle soap and water for the first round. I ordered sewing machine oil but I don’t know how long it will be before it arrives.

Oooh, it’s a Red Eye! Lovely.

Oh, thank you for the link! That’s super cool.
Some of the decal is worn off but I’m hoping with a good clean and oiling it’ll… look okay. I have the piece of missing veneer from the front cabinet. Just needs some wood glue. Ideally it’ll also work.

That is a beautiful machine.

There was an old Singer treadle machine in my grandma’s house that got sold off at auction (I was only 10). I’m still sad we don’t have it anymore.

There are many out there if you want one. They are kinda albatrosses, too. They weigh a TON. Moving with this was… not awesome.

But yes. It’s gorgeous. Just needs some love. waits impatiently for sewing machine oil to ship

Looks like the machine itself weighs 30# about. Some randos on the internet suggest their cabinets weigh 60-75# in addition.

It’s a chonker.

This whole discussion makes me want to ask my mom if she can grab me a photo of my grandma’s the next time she ends up over there. I’ve only used it once but it has been sitting there in her sewing room my entire life. I just never noticed the exact details to know which model it is. I’d ask grandma but I don’t want to encourage her to try to go down her stairs right now to look and I know she will if she can’t remember some of the details.

Haha there are no old things in California. We are not a place of old things. And when they do exist, they are expensive.

Sounds about right. My husband asked a friend to help load it in the Jeep when we bought it. To be fair, part of that was wanting to be careful with the moving parts (and with the soft top on the Jeep), but 100 pounds is about the minimum required for him not to be able to manuver and finesse things carefully by himself.

I want to make this. It would probably suffocate me. It certainly would get looks. I kind of don’t care.

I saw that and it’s so beautiful.

Right? It’s just so pretty. And then once the pandemic ends (:crossed_fingers:) you can make it part of your steampunk costume for the next con.
