Anybody have a hamburger bun recipe they recommend? Preferably with no dairy, though milk and butter can be substituted.

Mass arepa, salt, water. Mix. Make balls bun size and shape. Cook on cast iron. Cut, eat.

I have one, but it has milk, butter, AND egg, so I don’t know if that’s gonna work for you. :frowning: Just in case, it’s this brioche bun recipe, which makes 4 delicious lil buns.

If anyone posts a vegan bun recipe I’m intrigued, because I’d love to be able to make homemade buns for our vegan neighbors…

This week has been … a thing, with doing online school for Kiddo and two WFH jobs and we have been reminded once again that we do not own a time machine and there are only twenty-four hours in a day, so I’m trying to think of what I can prep ahead this weekend so that next week’s meals are basically “turn on oven, put thing in oven when preheated, dinner’s ready.”

I have some I’ve done in the past but I’m looking for new ideas too. Suggestions?

Chili

Tater tot casserole
Chop vegetables for salad
Tacos (prep taco meat)
Enchildas
ETA: marinate meat (if you eat meat) - wet or use dry rubs. I often season meat before storing in the freezer. Lets the flavor permeate.
Make pizza dough - store in fridge

Ooh, thanks! I ended up using King Arthur’s recipe but that looks really good and less sweet. I’ll have to try it in the future.

I do eggs and the milk and butter can be substituted (as I did with the King Arthur recipe), so that’s totally fine.

I love the hell out of that recipe – let me know how it goes with the butter/milk subs!

I recently discovered this recipe, they are so amazing! I made them for friends and they requested that I bake more just to eat with butter…they have such good texture

me after Wednesday lunch - wow, that was a really good meal
me before Thursday lunch - what was it I ate on Wednesday that I enjoyed so much?? […]
me before Friday lunch - no really, what was it I ate for lunch on Wednesday that was so yummy? maybe instead of that I’ll add walnuts, labneh and muhammara to this bowl

me right before heading to bed on Friday

oh, right, I had bought bacon ends from the local expensive butcher, and fried some up on Wednesday
and then I added the lardons to my meal of rice & charred green beans & roasted tomato & feta

reminder to self, that was good

We do a lot of bacon + kale dishes. Just a little bit goes a long way.

I’m not sure this is the right thread, but: Does anyone have a good online source for vanilla extract that is not obscenely expensive? Just used my last bit, didn’t realize I was that low.

I’ll probably just get it from Penzeys, next time they’re running a promo. $$$$$$$ but I like supporting them. Aldi has it but it’s always so packed and mask compliance is iffy.

King Arthur Flour has some vanillas at different price points: https://shop.kingarthurbaking.com/ingredients/vanillas

I believe a vanilla shortage started like 5-6 years ago and it’s been freakishly expensive everywhere. However, this place is a delicious ice cream shop in SF and also sells vanilla beans. I haven’t gotten their extracts but I bet they are good stuff. Not sure how much shipping is though.

Good price, but shipping costs more than the vanilla does. Hm. It might be a wash between this and ordering from Penzeys (where I do need other things) and waiting until they have some sort of deal or free shipping. I missed out on their last good deal which I think was 2 free jars if you spent some fairly low amount?

I got a free small bottle in a deal (“box of love?”).

Costco has be about $25/16 ounce the last couple of times I have looked.

Thanks. Those prices seem about in line with Penzeys so I’ll probably just wait until they have a special offer and order it then along with the berbere seasoning I’m out of and probably a few other things.
