She will have to stay at the vet for probably 4 days and what I’ve read online is that she should be isolated at home for another week. I know that I won’t be able to last that long and I will probably have to go sleep at a friend’s house so I don’t sleep with her. If there is a closed door between us she will just yell until it is opened so no sleeping will happen. The easiest (and least stressful for her) thing will be to let her have the entire house like normal and I remove myself at night and of course I will be at work during the day.
Litter has to be set aside for like 3 months before it can be thrown away.
I spoke with my vet today, she said I should make the appointment for the procedure and that she will do whatever testing they require in the correct timeframe because they have certain requirements. I’m getting her some Gabapentin for the long car rides since she yells at me when she is in the car just for 15 minutes to go to the vet. I probably wouldn’t do this except for the fact that the medicine must be harsh on her skin and her ears are getting scabby. I don’t want her to have that for the rest of her life.
Looks like they use I131 - which has a really short half-life (8 days). Though it is a higher energy emitter than the isotope I used in the lab way back when, it looks pretty safe overall.
And the treatment looks to be very highly effective, and an easy procedure for kitty. The isolation is really the worst part
My vet said she’s a big fan of this procedure, and the place I will take her is a vet school. I feel good about everything other than the isolation part.
We have crossed for camping, and they mostly want to know that you aren’t bringing in Firewood, Fruits, or vegetables. They may ask to look in your cooler or trunk.
I’m guessing that it used to be ok to bring fresh fruit and veg over, because my memory is having carrot sticks and raisins and apples on car rides to visit family in the US. And my mom complaining at some point that it was US apples and we couldn’t bring them back over the border. She is very rule abiding, so I guess it would have been right around the switch.
Maybe I just remember all the other car rides having fruit and veg. If those were the rules, then we definitely followed the rules (except the time we were asked if we were bringing anything back, and my dad said ‘no’ and I was all ‘but aunt Joyce gave us that bag of clothes’).
Insurance question: I always hit my deductible of $3400 but have never hit my OOP max. I need to have a hysterectomy soonish, but I’m not sure if I can schedule it this year still or if it will be next year anyway.
If I can get it done this year, should I? I feel like it’s better to wait until January because I am sure I will hit my OOP max with a surgery and actually save money on my expensive prescription. Am I wrong?
It sounds like you’ll hit your OOP max in one year but not both. If you knew that, other than the hysterectomy, your costs, deductible and OOP max would all remain the same, I’d say it wouldn’t make a difference.
Financially, I think the main reasons to do it next year would be if there are other things you’ve been deferring or you can choose a plan with a lower OOP max. Of course there’s always the unknowns: There may be things you’ll need to do next year that you don’t know about yet, drug costs could go up, etc. It’s also possible your OOP max could go up next year too.
I wouldn’t delay it if there are any health risks of doing so.
There’s nothing I’m deferring and my plan is chosen by work so I cannot change it. We are a small company and all have the same plan. There’s no medical reason to do it sooner. I wasn’t sure if I might end up spending less on medication if I hit my OOP max in January. Mounjaro is $2100 for 3 months until I hit my deductible. I may not have a choice anyway, by the time I have my surgery consultation she might be scheduling into next year.
I gave birth just a few weeks into a new insurance year and it was kinda nice to have lots of time to schedule all the specialists for various things my body needed to get checked non-urgently. Kinda took away a little of the sting of having the prenatal checks all on one deductible and the birth/hospital stay on a different one.
Does the same deductible/OOP max apply to prescriptions in your plan? I’m pretty sure mine are separate (though it’s possible I don’t understand it since sometimes my prescriptions seem to be randomly free).
Oh, and I have one: do you have to have a Costco membership to get a vaccine at Costco? That’s the only place within 50 miles that has the new mRNA flu vaccine.
