Dawn works, it’s true. Original Dawn, the blue one. If it can get oil off of adorable ducklings and otters, it can get oil out of Mr. Meer’s shirt, right? Put it directly on the spot, rub it in, rinse it out, put more on and rub it in, wash. It should work! It has for me in the past.

Even after going through the dryer??? I would think it would at least get some of it out.

If that doesn’t work - soak the whole shirt in oil…

I wanted to suggest this

Honestly I would try Dawn+ baking soda on washed & dried oil stain, but if that didn’t work I’d give up…

Yes! I have saved shirts with grease spots that I thought would never leave with magical Original Dawn.

So the heat is the problem when you’re dealing with textiles and oil, so having it already go through the dryer isn’t great. But dawn soap applied directly to the stain should help, you might need to do it a few times. The dish soap helps break down the oil the same way it does on the dishes.

Hi! :wave:t3:
I have a random question.
If I purchase some old phone on Craigslist/Offer Up/Etc. can I use it to connect to WiFi and play YouTube at my house without having any type of service plan on it?

I want an object that is not my work phone or laptop to play videos for my kitty on. She’s very very into bird and fish videos right now and I think it would be enriching for her for an hour a day or so.

I’m very non-techy, so naturally I did not know if this was an option.

The tl;dr: what to do with a free replacement item I was sent on account of my complaining for gross failure to meet delivery date, when I didn’t ask for that remedy?

The full story:
I recently purchased a ladder from Evil Overlord Company (EOC) for about $100. I specifically chose one that would show up at my home very quickly, at no extra charge to me.

Over the course of the week, shipment got delayed once, then again, and then the update suggested it may have been lost, and then yet another far in the future date. Meanwhile, I put off the tasks that inspired me to order ladder in the first place.

I finally contacted customer service to complain on Thursday night. I requested a refund and a minor credit for being inconvenienced. I noted that I was on the fence about renewing my EOC membership.

EOC customer service responded quickly, apologized, and sent out a replacement ladder with fast shipping to me. It was listed on my account as a separate order for $0.

One ladder got delivered on Friday. A second ladder was delivered today. According to my account, the Friday one was the original one (when I complained, it didn’t have an expected delivery date/tracking # suggesting that arrival was imminent). The one that came today was the replacement.

I have no need for two ladders and no reason to devote storage space to it.

There is no indication that I will owe anything or be expected to return this additional item, nor do I have the desire to spend time going to do so (not wanting to go anywhere to do anything is why I bought it online from EOC in the first place!).

I would like to stop using EOC (for ethical reasons), but I also have no delusion that I would be hurting EOC if I benefit by getting a free ladder. I’m sure the pain point for this is both in the price paid and pressure exerted on other parties in this transaction.

My instinct is to resell this windfall ladder online, and my random question is whether that seems reasonably ethical/appropriate or if there is something else I should be doing (like donating the proceeds to workers’ rights groups or something). Also - is there a reason NOT to resell and try to return? Or just gift it in my local giving group?

I feel like companies of that size definitely account for those mix-ups in their budgets. I have strict personal ethics around things like going back to a store when I notice I wasn’t charged, etc, and I wouldn’t have a problem gifting or selling the extra ladder.

Same Same. @FIFoFum

You might even be able to find a local community center or youth outreach program and email them to see if they know of any young grads going into trade services who might need equipment.
Like a teen starting a power washing business straight out of high school or something like that.

Is there a way to do a one time donation to OMD rather than a patreon?

This, and @anomalilly is there an ebook purchasing and gifting source other than Amazon Kindle? I’m going to offer to buy it for a few people on my birth board, and ebook seems less creepy. I think I remember you doing multiple formats in the original Kickstarter, but I can’t find the ebook on your page or anywhere but Amazon.

Sorry for making you work. But yay for paying rent?

@turtlegirl the best way is to buy a pay it forward book to get donated  https://shop.ohmydollar.com/collections/pay-it-fur-ward

But also PayPal works at lillian@Ohmydollar.com

I love that you help teens in need, so I did the pay it forward thing.

Holiday Tip/Bonus for New-to-Me House Cleaner?

I have a bi-weekly house cleaner that started with me about 2 months ago. She’s coming this week for time #5 overall and may get in a 6th time before Christmas/New Years (holiday schedule pending).

Question: How much to give as a holiday tip or bonus, given how recently I became a client of hers?

Some relevant info:

She doesn’t work for a company or through a service. Her rates are below market for the area. She was referred to me through a friend who is a former/occasional client of hers. Visits are about 2 hours - the minimum she’ll do. I suspect she shorts out slightly on time because I’m not giving her enough to do in that time. That’s on me - my place is small and disorganized enough that there is a lot of “clean around” my clutter at this point.

Overall, she does what’s asked & what I’d label a “good enough” job. She doesn’t go “above & beyond” or “exceed expectations” or any barf-worthy term you want to use for someone you might want to pay extra or give extra bonuses to on account of performance. Note: I don’t EXPECT that service. Someone who does what I ask or expect is doing a good job in my book.

Culturally, it is normative here to give a holiday bonus to various domestic caregivers of various amounts. If this relationship began earlier in the year, I’d probably give a bonus = 1 one visit’s worth.

I view my options as: nothing, 1/2 a visit’s worth or 1 visit’s worth.

Thoughts?

It sounds like you expect to retain the service for next year? So I’d say the half visit worth makes sense. And if she’s completing her job in less than the minimum time I’d have no problem with leaving early. But if minimum was 2 and you booked for 3, and she left early without prorating, or if you had a list of projects.

Slightly off topic my friend got her first cleaning person ever this year, and they are also tackling decluttering and organizing together. The clean one even gives homework. It is a fascinating and successful dynamic. But would not be fun If you didn’t want that

I’d say 1/2 visit.
