My underemployed cousin needed to get from Boston to NYC and didn’t care how long it took, and I wasn’t going to tell him to spend $300 on a train ticket so I told him to take the Chinatown bus! If you’re lucky it’s like $15, but I have no idea where they pick you up or drop you off. Idk what he actually ended up doing but he made it to New York!

This is SO helpful, thanks friends. I am staying with my friend who has a newborn, and I know her well enough to know she genuinely wants me to spend the night, but I want to get in as early as possible.

Book as soon as you can. It’s common for tickets to be $40ish multiple weeks in advance but go up to $150+ the week of.

Know that subway to UWS will probably be faster than Lyft/Uber or taxi. Especially during rush hour. (Though it will be crowded.) I think the subways are tapless touchless (tap-to-pay) now, I’m not sure if you can even buy a MetroCard anymore (@darlingpants do you know?)

But taking a taxi would be 'simpler" than navigating the subway system, if you haven’t before.

You can still buy a metro card (at least the kiosks are all still there) but you can also just tap a credit/debit card or use Apple Pay and tap your phone

The subway to the UWS is easy peasy. Same building as Amtrak (Penn station) so it’s a simple transfer. You’ll want the uptown 1/2/3 train, depending on where exactly your friend is. 2/3 are express and only stop at 72nd and 96th st on the UWS.

Google maps is extremely reliable including if there are scheduled changes - you can trust whatever directions it gives you!

Does anyone have wall paper in a full bath (with regular shower usage)? What brand did you choose? I’m having a hard time figuring out which ones are ok for high humidity.

I have vinyl peel and stick wallpaper in my bathrooms and my rental bathrooms. It’s from home depot or Wayfair. It works great.
The non- sticker kind or textured wallpaper would not work but the smooth plastic stuff is a wonder.

I didn’t chose it but it’s not peeling

Has anyone purchased a freeze dryer? I’m really wanting one but idk if it’s really worth it or if YouTubers are just pushing them. I do think I would use it 2-4 times a month, especially because I have a good produce hookup.

We have one. My husband bought it a few months ago when it was on sale at Costco for what he said was a good deal. We’ve used it a few times but definitely not weekly. Toddler has really enjoyed the dried berries!

I think it’s worth it if you’ll use it, if that makes sense. We definitely haven’t made it “worth it” yet.

I have an Excalibur dehydrator.

I use it for camp food and berries /fruits /apples.

When I first bought a dehydrator we used it 3/4 times a month. Now maybe 2-3 times a year for camping or apples. I’d love a local friend with a freeze drier because I want one too! I suspect it is an appliance you want one person in your circle to own

@a_hardie how loud is it? How much space does it need? Our dehydrator doesn’t seem loud at first but it is too annoying to use often and needs a LOT of space.

It’s in our garage, and it does make a buzzing sound (that’s what it sounds like from inside the house, at least). And yes it takes up… idk… a good chunk of space, like a mini-fridge or bigger. It’s not something you want in the main part of your house. If you have a garage or basement with space that’s ideal.

This is a good reminder… I should be offering others to come use it!

I was thinking I could be this local friend. Because it is an investment I would want to share.

How concerning is a constant headache for 5+ days? The pain goes away with ibuprofen but then comes back in the same spot about 8 hours later if I don’t take another

if it comes back in the same spot I’d probably set up an appointment.

I’d set up an appt. In the meantime, a low level rehydration salt like liquid IV/LMNT that sort of thing (assuming no underlying health concerns like kidney issues where you’ve been told not to take those) to rule out electrolyte related cause, and if you can snag a nap and make sure you’re getting good night time sleep to rule out sleep deprivation headache, could be good ones to check. Electrolytes are usually my cause, even when I don’t “feel” dehydrated.

I would go to urgent care or ED if it’s an acutely painful headache, like someone doing head stabs with a knife or similar intense pain. Or if there’s significant eye involvement (you’re seeing lots of stars flashes that sort of thing). Off hand those are the more red flag situations that would have me say “care now” versus “schedule appointment”
