My dad and I used to sing this together when I was little. Top notch entertainment!

I have one car fund for either repairing our current car or replacing it in the future. I figure it’s really just “whatever is needed to keep wheels moving” fund.

We expect about $1000 a year in car maintenance and roll over what isn’t used to the following year since each years that goes by, the more likely you are to need a big fix/tune-up.

New car fund is mixed with all other cash savings and we aim to keep about 20k in there with the idea that it will be for replacing the next car. That’s a solid enough down payment for the sorts of cars we would buy that financing whatever’s over that and then cash flowing it would work out.

This keeps us from being completely locked out of ready money for things like trips or house renos and other needs, but also gives breathing room. In a true emergency situation we would figure out a 1 car solution to not buy a new one for a while.

That’s the problem :joy:. We spend that on purpose and so I need an actual plan now. I will go with @Marcela ’s $1000/year.

If you convert that amount to CAD it works.

Is there a less wasteful alternative to jar candles? Especially since I never burn them long enough to reach the edges. Must be hard to knock over.

I got a bunch of battery operated pillar candles at a thrift store once. It’s not the same but it’s definitely not a problem to knock them over

What about a cute candle warmer? I don’t like to have flames because I have a clumsy mini horse disguised as a dog living in my house. I get the nice smell of the candle and it lasts a super long time

I also have a bunch of LED candles when I want a cozy vibe without a smell or flame

I really prefer a real tiny flame. I only burn it in the bathroom during my bath so I don’t worry it will get knocked over except by myself getting out of the tub!

Are you saying that you don’t burn them long enough and then 50% of the wax never gets burned?

You can just scrape the outer ring of the wax away and re-make your candle once it’s done. That requires storing the wax and then doing a craft so it sounds like something I would start and then never finish.

The internet claims that nicer candles have this problem less and I have bought some very nice candles that don’t tunnel. Idk how long we normally burn them though.

Maybe get…smaller candles? Lol I just googled travel size candles and that appears to be a thing despite how funny it sounds

Tea lights for what you’re describing. You can get them scented and in fancy colors too.

What does one do with tea lights? Do they need some sort of receptacle?

You can usually put them on a plate or like in a glass if you want them to be pretty but you can also just burn them if it’s on a non-flammable surface

They’re the jack-o-lantern candles in case there’s a regionalism in here somewhere

There are pretty little lanterns and such you can put them in! It’s great.

Usually they are in their own little tea muffin cup so they can solo on a bath corner or counter top. Not a toilet tank.

I like the stability of jar candles and now just buy very small jars. The current ones are 2 inches in diameter and I have had no tunnelling.

According to the lovely lady who makes them, the first burning is the most important and you must make sure it goes right to the edge as that sets the candles ‘muscle memory’. So far, this practice has worked for me!

I tried letting my most recent IKEA jar candle burn for longer but even at a whole hour, it didn’t reach the edges and then I had to go to bed! Maybe I can find tiny jars. Or try the thing where you remelt the wax. Or maybe next time I can just light it way in advance.

I’ve given up on the bigger ones, I don’t have enough patience or organisation for the first burn.

Little ones from small makers can be rather expensive but are least there is no waste. Plus, a natural candle made with essential oils is one my favourite treats and I am finally learning to think that I’m worth it!
