Would Discord be the best option for setting up a way for family members to chat with each other but offering a way to separate out conversation threads unlike a massive group text message? Because my family shares everything from theology debates to scientific papers to just updates about our day and I know not everyone is down for the heavier topics, lol.

Edit: I don’t think we need the voice channel part so if there’s a text only app to consider that would be fine.

Pretty noisy inside.
Not noisy outside.
Yes, but not for large spaces. Cool off one room, yes, very good, you will love it. The whole house? No.

I’ve never done it because Luigi thinks other animals are NO, but my understanding is that volunteers just need to attend orientation and go through training. It didn’t look that difficult? Plus they have a program called Doggie Day Out and it just makes me squeee whenever I see the photos of the pups in their special vests or bandanas.

I broke the top to this big glass jar like a numbnut. How can I jerryrig a decent top? I was using this to store flour and ant proofing is very seasonally important here…

Plastic wrap/plastic bag + rubber band?

I got stretchy silicone lids for my Pyrex dishes that had shit plastic lids that broke. Something like that might work here

My sister did her first Instacart order today, from Costco. The delivery person was great, and she got her order within like 6 hours after ordering. The problem is that the delivery person gave her the Costco receipt so afterwards she could see the difference from what she paid Instacart, and it was about 75% more. Is that how it really works? Is their markup that high?

Yep. Right now it is. The markups are much higher since everything started. They’re gouging people like crazy.

That’s upsetting. I do Shipt and buy from Lidl and I don’t think its that bad with them. But maybe that’s because I paid $99 for a membership up front? Could also be because Lidl is so freaking cheap and I haven’t wrapped my brain around it fully though, since it just opened a few weeks before all this.

I’m acutely aware because I price booked my Costco buys, I’m very familiar with their normal prices.

A couple big examples. I’m pinned under a baby so I’m going by memory, but:

Normally like $10

And:

Normally like $3.50

And:

Normally like $5

Of course everything is different now, but she would have preferred not to know how much extra she paid. :joy:

I think Instacart actually prohibits the shoppers from leaving the receipts for just this reason, but my understanding is some are doing it anyway since they feel like IC is ripping off customers and still not paying enough. I also think Costco tends to tape receipts on and they might be easy to miss. We got a costco receipt yesterday too and this was my first time getting a receipt for an IC order.

Another thing to know is Costco apparently is doing special IC shopper hours, so our shopper was shopping at 6am yesterday and I was kind of confused! I’m so torn about IC because I don’t want to be asking someone else to put themselves at risk for me, but also I am high risk and happy to pay more (and tip generously) to get less. I’ve signed us up for a few delivery services that are regularly delivery (produce boxes, dairy, etc) so that we can reduce our need for any shops, but can’t do that for everything!

I want three 7.5-10 gallon food-save containers for storing flour. Any idea where I could get such a thing online for a not-insane price?

I had the idea of fermentation buckets but I’m still struggling trying to find a place to order it.

I liked these folks because they’re big enough to get the job done, but they haven’t sold out to Amazon or InBev.

Some of my brewing buddies use pet food containers, but those can smell weird.

Related question: how do folks store their potatoes, garlic and onions for longer term storage?

And where do you source those containers?

Wicker baskets are apparently the recommendation for potatoes but…I do not have wicker baskets haha.

On the kitchen counter until they start to sprout, then in the fridge. I do not recommend this method.

I appreciate your honesty.

In the fridge, always. Potatoes in one produce drawer and onions/garlic in another since I’ve heard that putting onions/potatoes together is no bueno for them keeping.

Currently very low on produce, but this is where I keep garlic and onions.

Potatoes go in a dark cupboard just in the bag they come in.

“In use” garlic goes on a little wood plate in the spice cupboard by the garlic press.
