I have replaced two garbage disposals and am 100% in favor of calling someone in if it’s wired. They have workers comp if they need it, not to mention experience doing bunches of other disposals and whatnot.

How does non modem internet work, is there something like a hot spot I could buy at Walmart today for one month of service? Really just a few days of service while we have no power. Our phones are Google Fi so no house wifi means very limited internet.

Worst case we’ll be okay and I go to the library for real wifi once they get power back.

I can check a hotspot out of the library. Might be worth checking with yours.

Regular hot spots use the cell phone network. So maybe not much better than a phone.

Turning on roaming can help if the various carriers cooperate, which they usually do during storms (eg verizon tower is down so ATT lets their customers on)

A satellite phone would probably be the thing for emergency contacts

My son wants me to make him a twin sized blanket using random mismatched yarn. Does anyone have a good pattern or suggestion for something with color blocks or something?

I can both knit and crochet but I’m not especially good at either, so it also needs to be pretty easy?

Well, granny squares are a common pattern and really easy. I think it’s a huge PITA to sew all the squares together.

Zigzag quilts are another easy pattern (all single crochet). These are a couple my mom made with leftover yarn.

My mum made me blankets out of yarn I bought and didn’t use. Basically knit a ball and then another ball etc. lovely and random.

This is yarn from the 90s that I took from my MIL’s house after 2 glasses of wine . The kid does not need another blanket but I believe he would use and cherish it and it would give me something to do with my hands while I watch TV.

Husband has planned to connect our modem to the lawn mower battery powered inverter. The idea is that att fiber would still work as long as there is a way to power the modem/gateway.

I have no idea if this plan is sound, but Helene leaving us with no communications at our house for 14 hours left us shook.

feather and fan / old shale is really mindless knitting pattern that does well with striping.

This worked for us two ice storms ago. The last ice storm I think Comcast was down separately from the power so it didn’t help. The logic is sound, though!

Does anyone make their own peanut butter in a high-powered blender or food processor? I’m looking for ways to reduce my use of plastic in general and non-recyclable plastic in particular but without increasing my use of glass jars (heavy to transport, possibly not all that recyclable either).

Yes! I have made tons of peanut butter and almond butter in the food processor. I have a vitamix blender and have done it in there before, but it’s a huge pain and difficult to get out. The food processor does peanut butter in about 3-5 minutes and so much easier to clean! I personally like the texture of homemade food processor peanut butter over the texture of that “grind it yourself” stuff that you can get at various health food stores, too.

Interesting! I would love to know more about your process for making it in the food processor.

I’ve been buying store brand prepackaged natural peanut butter, the kind that is a huge pain in the ass to stire.

It’s so easy! Just buy roasted (unsalted or salted) peanuts, dump in food processor and let it run until it’s creamy. Peanuts are good because they are on the more oily side, so they only take a few minutes. Minimal scraping, although it can clump and you might need to scrape it down a few times as it’s going along, you just have to watch and see. With drier nuts like almonds I used to add coconut oil sometimes to get it going. Basically it will seem like its doing nothing for a while and form a big clump, but once the heat of the food processor + oils start to release, it will suddenly magically form peanut butter.

How do rental cars abroad work in terms of adding additional drivers? Is it expensive? There are four of us going to Iceland so it would be nice if we could all take turns driving, but not if it will cost us an arm and a leg. When I go to make the reservation, it doesn’t give me the option.

My credit card seems to cover us for the rental insurance part, which is cool.

I think “abroad” may be too broad as this has varied country by country, and might be a company dependent thing also, in my experience. Your best bet is to reach out directly. Also see if the country requires an international driver’s license (EU countries have in our recent trips)

People who know about makeup - I need your help with a lip color related matter.

I don’t normally wear lipstick. I wear plain chapstick. Also when I put on chapstick I usually kind of smear it past the edges of my lips (mentioning this because tinted chapstick doesn’t really work for me unless I want to look like Robert Smith from The Cure).

For a performance I’m in, I want to have the look of dramatic lipstick. But when I wear lipstick it doesn’t last and I don’t like how it feels. I assume I kind of lick/chew/rub it off? I don’t know. I just know it’s gone quickly.

I’ve seen videos of peel-off lip stains. Is that something that would work for what I’m going for? Like, they’d temporarily color my lips and I wouldn’t be able to chew it off? Ideally I could even put chapstick on over it without messing it up?

Have you tried lip stain? I tried it recently (I’m also not big on make up) and it lasted longer than lip stick but did still wear off eventually.

No, I’ve never tried it. 99% of my makeup is free samples that my mom gets and passes on to me. :joy:
