Any chance you use linux? Cron runs jobs on a set schedule and I think there’s a text client available.
I haven’t used a text setup, but I have threatened to set up an email cron job to repeat every two hours when certain people (a certain person) at work kept forgetting to respond to a specific critical task in a timely manner . He got the point.

Ah sadly I do not. Was worth a shot though!

and thanks @MonkeyJenga. I could set that up but if I text him from another number he’ll probably ignore it as spam, even if I tell him it’s me. He is frustrating but also currently my biggest source of income so here we are.

When I got pregnant I weirdly developed the ability to see dirt and mess I’d never noticed and then feel motivated to clean it. So I assume we can put that hormone in pill form, manufacture and distribute it. Then you can use the money to hire a cleaner

Also posted this in my journal but wider audience here.

What do you think a reasonable amount of $USD per month per person is for groceries?

Details: moderate meat consumption and can’t go much lower without impact on our health (we’ve tried), most othe meat is sourced humanely and locally or raised by me (feed is included in groceries), roughly half of produce organic or grown myself (seeds and garden supplies also included), alcohol included in groceries, finally we have basically zero restaurant spending so all meals are represented in groceries.

Trying to decide if I’m happy with our current spending or if I should try cutting it down some. My kids all eat more than Alchemist (small adult) but less than me (fairly large adult) so I figure we’re basically equivalent to a household of 5 adults.

Currently budgeting $1300/5 so $260/person.

I spend $150/ month on average for just me, an omnivore. This includes household items (like the elusive TP) and alcohol, but I don’t use much of either. Plus ~$50/month for eating out. But I don’t prioritize ethical sourcing/organic, so that would definitely increase the cost.

ETA: So your $260pp looks reasonable to me!

This doesn’t include household stuff, but the stuff in that category that’s not supplements specific to my health issues or other OTC medical stuff is a fairly minimal extra cost per person.

Our grocery spending has been inching up for a while and now with self isolation, we are at about $350 a month for 2 adults. This includes all household supplies like tp, detergents, shampoos etc.

I’ll just leave it at… we spend substantially more per person than that. Lol.

I thought learning to cook would make eating cheaper. But then I learned I could make escargot whenever I wanted

Seems ok.
Not sure if you’re in a high cost of living location or moderate, that changes grocery prices a bit.
I spend under $200 (varies a bit month by month) including all household items but not including out-to-eats, which are rare and usually just coffee splurges. Right in the middle of low/high cost of living.

I spend around $100/mo, occasionally up to around $150 though that is rare. I am firmly pescaterian and eat occasionally tofu, and I do eat dairy (including cheese) and eggs. This is only groceries, no alcohol (which is rare) or restaurants (which is rare) or any cleaning or paper products or anything like that. I make a significant portion of my own food and almost never eat prepared foods, which I think makes a big difference. (Like, I never buy bread, yogurt, certain cheese, pasta, kimchi, saurkraut, ice cream…)

Mid to mid low COL.

I don’t think I’m answering the question asked, but it sure seems that you thoughtfully budget both grocery money AND time spent on food production (e.g. your urban farm/garden) in alignment with your food values. Based on that, you are spending the “right” amount feeding your family.

Thanks, that’s a good way to think about it

I want to make pumpkin bread. I have no neutral oil (besides avocado oil?) and no normal applesauce. I’m also, sadly, strictly dairy free. I have avocado oil; coconut oil, and olive oil. I have some non dairy butter that is too precious to use like this.

Is there a substitution or recipe option for me?

I know I’ve made quick breads with coconut oil - lemme see if I can find any recipes that look similar to what I remember ratio-wise

I’d go coconut oil. Honestly I usually just sub it one-for-one with butter and it comes out fine. (This is how I veganize a lot of stuff for my vegan friends.)

Thank you! Do you think 1:1 for vegetable oil too?

Probably. The fat content should be fine, it’s just whether or not the texture would be too dry because coconut oil is less liquidy. I think I’d try melting the coconut oil. Since it sounds like you know this recipe, if the mix looks too dry later, you can always add a little bit of liquid to make it the right texture.
