Got an answer on the pet health insurance for our dog and thought you might be curious on the numbers - I had to call in rather than using the online quote tool, but in my state Trupanion can cover anywhere from 50% to 90% of the costs for covered items (which is basically new problems only, not preexisting conditions or wellness checks). 50% coverage cost $109/month and 90% coverage is $226/month.

Since we’d probably go with the 50% plan, if we don’t go with that then we’d have to have more than $2,616 in vet costs in a year to make it worthwhile if my math is right (109 times 12 months time two because it’s only covering 50%). She’s getting older so most of what she’s dealing with is low grade chronic stuff rather than crazy puppy oops she broke a limb antics so for us it makes more sense to not do the insurance right now.

So interesting: this is a lot more than we pay! It must go up a lot as dogs age, which makes perfect sense. I think we hit the insurance sweet spot of young but expensive dog.

If you wanted to take an online, synchronous college or college-style class, where would you look? I like the structure of this format and couldn’t find anything local. I want to take a Mandarin class for fun, so I don’t need college credit.

Have you looked at Coursera before? I know they have classes from all sorts of universities/colleges

I’d look for some kind of Chinese cultural center in major cities and see if they’re offering Zoom instruction. That’s how I found the Japanese class I took last year and it was fantastic.

Oh smart, I’ll try that. I’ve been looking at denver cultural centers and there doesn’t seem to be much for adults, but I bet bigger cities would have more options.

Oof, that’s expensive, probably because she’s an old dog. For Emma (who is still 1) Trupanion is under $30 a month with a $500 deductible, covered at 90%. I think I may sign her up, as Trupanion is the only insurance that doesn’t raise rates with your pet’s age, only as premiums go up due to vet costs. Who knows if she still has a bunch of mask cords sitting in her tummy. For under $400 a year I think worth it for peace of mind! I don’t think we’ll get insurance for Anneke though.

Her birthday is in a couple of weeks and it’ll make her premium go up $3 a month! So it’s good timing to sign up now and lock in the lower price.

Yeah I’m sure from a business perspective they expect to have to pay out X over the lifetime of a dog and they can either get it in fewer years or more years.

It’s rewarding you to sign up early when your pet isn’t likely to need the coverage, but once a pet is old they’re very likely going to need to use it!

That’s Husband’s view on it. Luigi at this point is too old to make insuring him worth it between his pre-existing conditions and the price of the premiums. We’ve just decided we will use some of our filthy lucre to self insure. Future family members will be insured from puppy hood.

I haven’t tried it but there’s a “rock identifier” app on Google play and the apple store that might help?
