I think I’ve read that large wage increases and multi year bargaining agreements (for union jobs) became the norm. Which didn’t make up for the inflation - real wages dropped - but not by as much as they could have.
US bureau of labor statistics: 1981
E.g., this shows a 12.5% CPI increase and an average 10% wage increase for 1980.
Huh, I wonder how much of that everyone were middle class and up white men. And I’m sure there was a great deal of propaganda about how the pension was going to take care of people later in life so a lot of people either didn’t look at their statements or didn’t understand what they were looking at.
Mr. Meer just got a statement from an investment company - he left his 401k at his prior job at whatever company it was with, it’s now with a different company (due to previous employer being bought I think) and he was surprised at the balance (I don’t think he knew how much was in that account since I do the bookkeeping) and annoyed that it lost money over the last quarter even though he had no idea what kind of funds it’s invested in. And he’s probably forgotten about it since then, whereas I’m dying to get that money rolled over to a Vanguard account with low fees.
Someone who works in an office please try this and tell me.
If you have an image on your phone and the phone is on, face down on a photocopier, ans you photocopy it, does the image on the phone screen show up in the photocopy?
Yeah the other weird tidbit I came across was that apparently quite a lot of pensions were only tied to the pension-holder so there was no beneficiary. Once the pension holder died their spouse/kids/etc. got nothing. I wonder if that (partly) created the market for life insurance?
I think this is part of the unions / societies having self insurance pools. Similar to the pools for a suit or a watch - everyone would put in $1 a week, and every week one person got the x. I’m not sure how they enforced that you finished paying out your weekly dues beyond social pressure, or if they rigged things so that you needed to have paid like 75% towards before you could win, or what. (or was it just a boring ponzi scheme?)
my efforts to google this morning are not getting useful keywords, so I can’t find anything beyond my faulty memory saying I heard about this somewhere. I hope someone with more memory or better skills can help find more info.
Is there a way to block videos on Facebook? I keep getting sucked in and end up watching as hours go by.
I like Facebook to stay connected to friends and know about things going on in my community, but these videos are killing me.
Anyone have a recommendation for umbrellas that don’t break after a single use? I just bought one and got to use it twice before I had to throw it away. I’m talking ones in the $10-$20 range, not super cheap ones, although at this point I’m going to give up entirely and buy the $5 umbrellas to use once. It’s so frustrating. It also might just be hopeless given in my area any rain seems to always include high winds.
Honestly, I’ve never seen the point of using an umbrella when it’s windy. Because the wind is just gonna blow the rain up under the umbrella and you’re going to get wet anyway. Why not just get a nice waterproof jacket that you can pull a hood up on?
That’s what I do too! I have trouble physically holding an umbrella upright even with light winds so I’ve always been in camp coat all the way. Wayyyyy easier.
I have a clear bell/bubble shaped umbrella that I have had for probably 15 years. I think this shape is much better for windy days, and does a really good job at keeping rain off. And the clear ones are nice because on dark rainy days it is not so dark under the umbrella. If I only used a raincoat, my glasses would get soaked, which isn’t pleasant.
Remember this? I’m now packing up and shipping out an e-reader loaded with 600 books, at least some of which they hopefully like. Thanks, friends, for making this possible.
Has any other glasses wearer here had astigmatism correction added to their lenses and just felt…super weird? I feel like I’m in a fishbowl and I can’t focus on things unless they are right in front of me. I’ve only had the lenses for a day, so maybe it just takes some adjustment? I literally feel like my brain isn’t working right since I put these glasses on!
Yep! I have astigmatism in only one eye and for a while I had different lenses for each eye and I couldn’t get used to it. I ended up going to another eye doctor (because I moved) and they said usually they wouldn’t recommend astigmatism correction for someone with my level of it (slight, I guess?) and especially not for only one eye. IDK if any of that is helpful, lol, but I use regular lenses now and FWIW my vision issues haven’t gotten disproportionately worse as a side effect.
