I didn’t have time to watch all of that, but when I was looking into carbon offsets I ended up buying them through Climeworks because it was the only thing I could find with multiple academic papers confirming their claims on reducing atmospheric carbon. I think they are a for-profit company but in my view, these are the kinds of companies we need to succeed so I’m choosing to support them.
The big question seems to basically be- is it funding an additional project that wouldn’t have existed otherwise?
What the f is “meet cute”? I keep hearing this term and I don’t know what it means.
I think it’s like when two people who will later fall in love have a weird (but in a good way) first meeting. Like in 101 dalmatians when Pongo wraps the two humans in his leash and they fall into the pond. I think it’s mostly in books and movies, not real life. A plot device.
Can you tell I watch a lot of kid movies?
Yep, classic Rom Com moment. If you watch The Holiday, Jack Black is self referential about their “meet cute” in the movie. His character works in the film industry.
IRL I’ve heard it used to mean people met out in the world instead of on dating apps.
Ahhh I wonder if that’s part of why it’s catching on so much?
Oooh, okay, that explains one of the instances I saw.
Does anyone use ceramic pans? If so, do you like them? The brand I’ve just seen is Green Pan, but I’m sure there are others.
Yes. We use them only for eggs. If you’re used to Teflon, it’s going to be a harder transition for you. You really do need to be serious about their care, and they do have a shorter lifespan than the Teflon. But for us Teflon is a nonstarter, so ceramic pans are kind of the best option we have.
The people I see struggle most with them are people who are used to cooking on low temperatures, and people who use no fat at all. Low temperatures make stuff stick, that’s kind of true for any type of pan but Teflon obviously gets around that with the chemicals they use in the coating. It turns out much better if you preheat the pan, and use some fat. Adding eggs to a cold pan dry is generally never a good idea
I do have Teflon, and was assuming ceramic would be stronger/last longer. If that’s not true I won’t switch. I have a few pans that get used a lot that are starting to stick and not clean up well, so I probably only have to replace those. But I’m that person who likes things to match even though nobody else will ever see them, so I buy cookware sets. I should probably get over that…
I know people who love stainless steel, but I feel like mine would look awful.
We use stainless and cast iron, and get around the egg issue by doing all scrambled eggs in Corelle bowls in the microwave. I know we’re heathens.
To be fair, anything with a coating of any sort won’t last long if you put it in a dishwasher, use metal utensils on it, so on.
I wash by hand and use silicone tools. I use one of those wand things to wash, maybe the head is abrasive? Should look.
I don’t know on that in particular. Any coating though has a limited life. Unlike stainless or cast iron, these won’t be going down through generations.
Here’s a just for fun question inspired by BJ’s and my nostalgia trip:
What was the first thing you ever bought on the internet? Do you remember what it felt like?
I have zero recollection honestly. I vaguely recall going to websites to redeem sweepstake type things, but I don’t remember my actual first purchase online.
I asked husband, and apparently his was a Spider-Man hat. he said it felt super sketchy because it took like three weeks to arrive, there was no tracking information back then, and he wasn’t sure if he just sent money into the void.
I got a used (film) SLR camera from ebay. It was the year 2000.
OMG I felt the same way! I remember thinking…we’ll see if this works and hoping for the best. There were no confirmations or anything and I worried it was a scam, but I thought it was so cool and I was obsessed with technology and couldn’t resist. I was in the 5th or 6th grade (98-00) and it was a sleeveless t-shirt with a screen printed picture of Twiggy on it from Old Navy (I lived in a rural area and had never heard of the store before). I didn’t know who she was I just thought it looked cool. I was kind of shocked when it arrived and I remember thinking, THIS IS THE FUTURE!!! Haha.
