I need more protein in my diet, I am thinking of smoothies. I can try more eggs and meat, but historically that just doesn’t last long before I give up and go back to carbs. I did not like the taste of soy when I tried it years ago, not sure if it has changed or not. I did a google and found that there are plenty of other protein powders out there, but does anyone have recommendations? Basically I want it to either taste good or have no discernable taste when mixed in.

Collagen peptides have an amino acid profile that tends to balance peoples other AA consumption pretty well, and they’re totally undetectable in drinks and foods to me. I like the vital proteins stuff they sell at Costco.

Also re eggs, this is one way we get Latte to have eggs when she’s not in an egg mood. We batch them and they freeze really well. Baked Oatmeal Cups - Healthy Little Foodies

I bump it up to 2 eggs per batch and the texture is fine. It’s not an insane amount of protein, but a good little boost from a very yummy fruity source lol.

Would some higher protein grains like quinoa or amaranth help you get more protein while eating foods that seem like carbs?
I’m not a smoothie person but I imagine they would make a smoothie texture weird, if you are specifically looking for smoothie recommendations this may not be helpful.

Cottage cheese has a surprisingly high amount of protein - 12-14g per 1/2 cup. I Ike it with fruit, but savory works too.

Shrimp is also very high in protein - 12g per 3 oz (= ~8 large)

Oh good, I’m glad it was helpful. A lot of people have very bad experiences with AA, I can’t believe it’s still so dominant, so I feel her on that. Maybe some of the books listed on hip sobriety will be helpful for her if she’s a reader. I hope she finds some light very soon! <3 You’re a good friend!

If you want smoothies this is what I use. I don’t like chocolate/vanilla/sickly sweet drinks and this is one of the only fruity protein powders on the market. It’s the best tasting protein thing I’ve ever had by a long shot and it’s high quality in terms of sources.

Also, have you ever tried quest bars? Those are pretty good for protein bars. Kind of like candy.

I have probably had almost every brand of protein powder out there, and so far I really enjoy the Orgain brand of protein. It’s plant based (maybe they have a whey option too?). I like the vanilla as a base in smoothies with blueberries/cherries/bananas etc. When I used to use whey protein I liked the Optimum nutrition brand, but I noticed for me whey really contributes to acne. I do still eat it in some bars, but having it regularly in protein powder is too much

Do you eat many dairy products? I recently started eating greek yogurt again, and I love it for a satisfying breakfast, lunch or snack. I think a cup of it (0% or 2%) has over 20g of protein, and I put maple syrup, a handful of granola and frozen blueberries in it. So good!

Also when I’m busy and just need an easy protein snack…I like Quest bars, and Power crunch bars

Thanks all! I will look up those bars and the powders mentioned. I do drink milk every day (probably a gallon a week) and eat cheese a few times a week, don’t like yogurt though. Maybe I haven’t had the good stuff, but it seems tart to me, and I don’t love tart/sour flavors much. I looked up recommendations for my age, and it says 46 grams of protein per day. At a guess, I might get 20 on an average day, but of course some days I will get more depending on whether I eat any meat. I just looked at my standard foods, and my milk, cheese, and breakfast bagels all have protein in them, so I probably get a bit more than I thought. I’m sure a smoothie or an oatmeal muffin is just generally a healthier breakfast than a white bread bagel or toast though…

I see they have a sample pack, that might be good to try. I do like sweet things! Do you mix with water? Milk? Do you add fruit or just drink plain?

Amazon has a variety pack of Quest bars for about $2 each, is that a good price?

ETA I bought the bars, I think that will be a good start. If I hate the taste I am sure my SIL will eat them. It looks like they are whey, not soy, so hopefully they are ok.

Sometimes I have mine with just ice (I have a ninja smoothie blender) but you could probably make it with water too. Usually I mix it with frozen fruit though. Mango is my favorite! IMO the frozen fruit really tamps down the flavor of the powder. That sounds like a good deal on quest bars to me!

brute recommended to me (I think it was brute) the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard whey protein powders a few years ago (I probably should start those again, to be honest). I tried the vanilla ice cream and double rich chocolate, and I liked them both. Something I sort of associate with protein powders is them being chalky (though maybe they are better in more recent years) and these were not chalky at all. A+ Kinda like a milkshake.

discussion of possible Raynaud's

I’ve twice now in the past month had symptoms that could be Raynaud’s - come in from hard exercise causing sweat in temperatures under 50 F, get in shower, hands/fingers go from pale to stark white/purple, take a while to heat up.

The first time I’m pretty sure I was a little hypothermic - long hard hike in 40-ish degree weather, was very warm while hiking but got very cold once we stopped and started shivering hard on the drive home - my whole body was going a little pale n purpley. The second time was a run today, and I wasn’t cold at all - but did feel some tingling in my hands while running.

Is this something I can wait until regular doctors appt in the summer to discuss, or is it like… go make a special? It seems like the first to me, because I don’t have any other symptoms you’d associate with broader autoimmune issues, but I really do want pushback from people who know things…

My symptoms aren’t as dramatic as that, but I’m pretty sure I have Reynauds and my doctor was like “huh, yeah probably” and was not worried and didn’t do anything about it. So I vote wait?

But aerobic exercise and hot water are the things that make my fingers have circulation again so maybe this isn’t the same as yours.

You’re young right? Women under 30 are the quintessential population that’s likely to develop primary Reynauds, which isn’t associated with any increased risks of anything else apparently, from what I’m reading. It’s just categorized as primary Reynauds phenomena. And they basically just recommend treating for symptoms, and there’s a couple meds you can do if it’s extreme. But it’s mainly just avoidance of cold temperatures and having the right gear and stuff like that. Without any other recent changes of any sort or symptoms, I probably would be comfortable waiting, but I play fast and loose with my own health. :joy:

I think the hot water helps actually move the blood around – the dramatic response is more like… hot water makes blood come to the surface and so it’s very obvious where there is and isn’t lots of blood in these peripheral vessels.
