I did https://www.freetaxusa.com/ last year and I genuinely liked it. A little less polished than H&R block which I’ve previously used for about 7 years, but I got angry because they wanted to charge me $50 because I had a schedule C.

Much cheaper and seemingly a lot less evil.

If anyone does go with Turbo Tax or Credit Karma, please let me know because if you follow OMD affiliate links it earns us $$

Thanks, I will try it. I do have a schedule C.

I used to recommend H&R block all the time for schedule C folks because I felt like it was the best of the free file options for self-employed people (very good at walking you through deductions). I was super upset it wanted to charge me for the first time!

I found that freetaxusa was reasonable though it’s more “bare bones” than the H&R block. And it charged me only like $8 for my state taxes (as opposed to $80) and no extra money for the schedule C’s.

I also used Freetaxusa last year, and I have schedule C income too. I found it really easy to use, I’ll probably never go back to TurboTax

I do “links lists” as I’ve said earlier. I verify the links every year, that’s what the verification means.

Yea it’s illegal in Oregon to put them in the trash, even if in a proper container. It’s a big issue because of our addiction and homelessness crisises - the combo means we have a lot of sharps on the street and no good way to dispose of them. The clean up crew I’ve been ocassionally volunteering for on the bike paths has had a hell of time with it, but found one grocery store that is accepting them as goodwill for cleaning up the paths.

They JUST started this trial of drop boxes as part of the effort - but I keep forgetting to bring them with me when I leave the house

Best Vegan chocolate? I want to send my niece a Valentines surprise and don’t know what to get. I googled of course but I know there are vegans here so I would get an unbiased opinion. I assume there’s stuff that’s better than others… My other non vegan nieces will get something easy like Dove or Ghirardelli brand. LOL.

Paging @anomalily but also @Economista because with dietary restrictions while BFing her girls she’s tried several I think.

Taza was my favorite when I had to go strictly DF for breastfeeding. But I didn’t try that many options.

I like Lily’s brand. The best tasting was actually enjoy life brand chocolate chips, but they only had the chips like you would use for baking. It tastes the most like regular chocolate.

I really love Alter-Eco chocolate, and I know they have some plant based options. I specifically love the quinoa crunch and sea salt dark chocolate.

Here is a link to all of their plant-based options: All Products – tagged "Vegan" – Alter Eco

I also second Lily’s chocolate, and Enjoy Life

My favorite brand is Lake Champlain. If you want to get really fancy and she likes death imagery you could get the Fatally Yours box from Vegan Treats! (Or maybe I’m just hoping someone will get me that…)

Lake Champlain is not all vegan but they have a vegan section on their website.

My fave local chocolates are from L.A. Burdick. They do have vegan options as well, but I’ve never had them.

I’ve been using Turbo Tax for probably a decade now but from another thread (can’t remember which) @MonkeyJenga posted an article about the lobbying Intuit has done to keep taxes complicated and not-free to file and now I definitely do not want to support them anymore. So I’m happy to learn of better options!

I got behind on my taxes. Went with Block. Still there. Expensive? Yes, but the woman who does our taxes and has now for over a decade knows my business quirks inside and out.

That was invaluable last year when I had a really bad case of vertigo/brain fog for months and couldn’t remember what I’d done, what I was thinking, etc. She knows me pretty well by now and trusted that I’d find a way to fix the problem, which I did.

She did offer to file an extension, which I almost did. I’m pretty sure that what we filed made sense and was right, but a lot of what I gave her before that was odd. I’d add a column of numbers then look at them an hour later and find things in the total that didn’t belong. Then a little while after that, I’d find something else, and then again. It was awful. After > 10 years of filing Schedule Cs, all of a sudden I just couldn’t figure mileage or inventory.
