Our stoves don’t have grills - broiling is putting stuff up at the top near the heat element and pretty hot. I think

Sometimes US ovens have a small drawer below the main oven compartment that broils. When the heating element is on the bottom of the oven, it’s then above the food placed in the drawer. I have a drawer and it’s really hard to try to pull casserole dishes out of it without burns or dropping food. A lot of people use this drawer exclusively for pan storage and not cooking. If there is a broiler, it is usually the very last/highest setting on the temp ° knob and says “broil”

Hmmm I’ve always had the top element broiler! And my drawers have always either been storage or warming (which I use as storage). So neat!

Right now I have a split oven and it is the best ever. Makes up for my crappy fridge

Elle: That sounds like what we call a grill actually. So now I don’t know what you all’s grills look like… lol

Mirepox: Oh interesting. Yeah, I’ve never seen a drawer like that. Like a kind of drip-tray also in a way? That sounds useful.

Update: Just looked up broilers, and it seems like an upside-down version of what we call a grill. We’d cook bacon or sausages or burgers on the grill. So much to learn!

No, no. When I’ve seen grills in England they are separate and above the stove. Broiling is hacking an oven so it gives some grill benefits.

Ohhhh, got you. Great description! That makes sense now. Thank you…

Yes, the broiling element is above the oven racks, and there’s no temperature control (at least not in the US) but the element gets really hot so it’s typically used for short periods of time on things that can handle the high heat.

The baking element is at the bottom of the oven (though I now have an induction oven with a fan so the heating element is ???).

Getting the same type of oven makes sense. You might find that the cooking times or temperatures are different than the old one, ovens will vary in temperature at the same setting, probably especially as they age.

Kiddo really, really wanted to get Mr. Meer some unicorn space pajamas. I’m not sure if the unicorns were supposed to be astronauts or something. We got some Boba Fett pajamas from Target but Kiddo later apologized to Mr. Meer for not being able to procure unicorn space pajamas. I cannot find this anywhere on the internet, but maybe I can get someone to make them? Is that something Spoonflower could help with? I have heard of it but never used it. Mr. Meer’s birthday is in early February, I’m trying to figure out if it would be ridiculously expensive to get some fabric to have some sleep shorts made and maybe also a tshirt for Kiddo.

I think the most affordable way would be to make an image and get it screen printed onto shirts and pj pants. Maybe just repeating space ships and unicorns emojis?

Oh man. Can we please make this happen? I volunteer as tribute to sew up some bomb ass unicorn space PJs

I’ve got a video job interview coming up and am struggling with my lighting. Anyone have a decent cheap ring light or something I could buy and have arrive here by Monday night?

Don’t know if you’re avoiding Amazon, but I have this one, it’s perfectly fine. The tripod is a little fiddly to set up but once it’s set up it’s fine. Lots of light settings and three colors of light. Makes me look glowy on zoom.

ETA oh it connects via normal USB which was great for my old work computer but new work computer is a Macbook air and only has USBc so needs a dongle which is annoying.

I am not avoiding Amazon. I have accepted Bezos will at some point have dominion over all aspects of my life.

Has anyone ever purchased GreenPan brand cookware?

I had two skillets (the champagne line, I think?) and they lasted…maybe 2-3 years? By the end of those years they were very, very sticky. To be fair, they were my only pans, so they got heavy use, but honestly I wasn’t super impressed :woman_shrugging:t2:

Very good to know! My pans get heavy use too.

I’ve been eyeing a set of these pans at Costco, I’m glad to hear your review…they look so nice! But it sounds like they aren’t really for long term heavy use

Same. Mine is my main pan and I’ve had it for about 3 years and it’s recently gotten pretty sticky (it also got put in the dishwasher a few times when we first moved to our new place in our giddiness over having a dishwasher for the first time :persevere: )

I had a sweater dress that I looooooved. The seller said that it was 17" pit to pit (size medium) when I bought it. I didn’t verify whether it was true, because despite my asking about fragrances it did come with a scent, so I subjected it to multiple days of a wool wash soak. But it’s not like I used hot water or agitated it very much! I hung it to dry. Well, now it’s a 15.5" pit to pit, and does not look good on me at all.

The same dress came up for sale on eBay but it’s an XL with a 19" pit measurement. I think getting a Large would be a better bet, but am wondering if I could gently shrink an XL and get it to work… The dress is 100% merino wool.
