Yeah, we have an expensive induction range and fancy pans and we still have combinations that whistle a little (large burner on high plus small front burner on with the small pan = buzzy whistle noise)

I have sometimes gotten some relief by getting some antibiotic ointment with lidocaine in it on my finger and sort of squishing it up under there.

Squeezing it under cold water helps for temporary relief for me, then a fingertip bandaid to make sure the skin doesn’t get pulled.

I wonder if it’s some sort of resonance frequency thing.

Yes, it is a resonance issue.

I would think the resonance would be affected by the volume of what’s in the pot. Remember filling up coke bottles with different levels of water and blowing across the top to make different notes? So I’m curious if the noise changes pitch / goes away with different fluid levels in the pots. Or does only the “outside” shape of the pot matter?

I don’t have an induction cooktop so I have no direct experience with this.

We’re thinking about getting an induction range, but I’m worried about annoying sounds. Would you still recommend it?

Absolutely yes. It heats lower and higher than gas. It instantly responsive. Other than right under the pot it stays cool and cools quickly, FAR less risk of burns. It’s instantly responsive to hear changes and heats evenly. I’ve never boiled anything over on induction, because if you turn it down as it gets close it just… stops! It’s incredibly efficient. There’s no way you can burn down your house leaving it on- it won’t heat with nothing on it, and it’ll turn off if it’s overheating from an empty pan. Glass top makes it SO much easier to clean. I will sing the praises of induction forever.

Biggest disadvantage that’s happened is that it won’t run when power is out, but you can still use gas (though not the striker) when power is out. But we have a camping stove we put on the patio when that happened, so ultimately no issues and definitely an edge case lol.

They’re also heavy AF (hello copper) so they’re hard to move on your own.

Well damn, if my oven ever breaks I’m getting induction. Especially for the cleaning. I hate cleaning my gas stove.

There was a very nice electric stove when we moved in here. Double oven. We sold it and then bought used an induction with convection oven. Best :clap:t3: Ever :clap:t3: Ended up being net $190 for that upgrade and this one is 2 years newer to boot.

(I even forgive it for being the cause of Latte’s ED trip. Metal vents on anything are a problem for tiny curious fingers…)

Healthcare.gov question!

Partner is quitting, ergo our insurance is ending June 30th. I am looking up marketplace insurance plans, and since I make not very much money (15K for 2021 most likely) I’ll get some good subsidies.

BUT
I am trying to find a plan that covers top surgery.
(Yes, I know. I had ‘top surgery’ already. But I had an aggressive reduction and am now looking for a traditional mastectomy style top surgery.)

How do I do this??

eta: Losing insurance via Partner is a Qualifying Event (yay!) and an opportunity to look for a plan that will cover this surgery. My current plan does not.

Partner is quitting is a YAY in itself! Whoop whoop!

I have zero marketplace experience so can’t answer your actual question

Congrats on partner quitting and upcoming top surgery!

My guess is that there are a pretty limited number of places near you that would offer the surgery, right? I have TMJ issues, which obviously is very different, but is also treated by a limited number of providers. I did some research to find those providers, and then called around to those providers to see what types of insurance they accepted. I used that info to narrow my list. E.g. let’s say I had access to insurance from Aetna, Kaiser, and United, and when I called around I learned that providers either didn’t take insurance or took Aetna. From there, I called Aetna* to confirm that their plans always covered TMJ treatment (they did), and then I looked at the costs of available Aetna plans to me to see which ones made sense for me financially.

*I am not 100% sure that Aetna was the insurer that did it, so if someone is looking for TMJ coverage, do not treat this as confirmed please.

There are a few providers! It’s a greater concern right now if the policy covers the procedure at all. AKA does the policy cover “gender confirming surgeries” at all or does it exclude them.

But that’s a good path forward! I can do that. I.e. pick a place, find an insurance, call them.

Makes sense, good luck! What a total pain that you have to deal with so many steps - hope it goes as smoothly as possible.

(and that’s not even the “what is required to GET the surgery approved” list. :upside_down_face: Which might include a year of testosterone therapy and a letter from a therapist.)

Mad at them for you! Dumb system.

Lil Pup was outside and I realized

Spoilered for the sensitive

Eating the fur and connected skin of a rabbit that got killed. I’m fairly certain she wasn’t the predator, and fairly certain the kill must have happened within the last day. Wild rabbit, we have lots in our area. None I’ve seen around are visibly rough or mangy looking.

Is there anything particularly menacing she might come down with, or am I good to just wait and make sure she doesn’t develop diarrhea and all that?

Might hurl in the house if she ate too much fur, but diseases unlikely.

It’s many years since I worked actively in vet med but for my own dog I am comfortable with a wait and see approach. My neighbor’s dog ends up getting at least one baby bunny a year.

Aside from GI symptoms, look for lethargy or conjuncitivitis. Not super common (maybe 200? human cases per year?) but tularemia can be transmitted by rabbits and IIRC the incidence is higher on the west coast and south central US. We sometimes would prophylactically treat with doxycycline so maybe ask your vet if they would recommend anything to cover your bases/for peace of mind. My neighbor’s vet has always had them just wait and monitor for symptoms, but they don’t have young children.
