FYI tin cans will rust (they’re mostly steel)

I think so - but that would add to the shabby chic vibe.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an easy way to keep track of what clothes you wear? I’m not interested so much in cost per wear or anything like that, but just trying to avoid wearing the same 5 outfits to work every week. “Oh, hey, it’s Wednesday, it must be black pants and blue v-neck shirt day.” I HAVE more clothes, but I put about 15 seconds worth of time into selecting what I’m going to wear in the morning and I end up grabbing the same stuff over and over.

If it’s stuff you hang up, two ideas are:

  • Put things on one end of the closet when you wear them and put them back each time.
  • Switch the hanger direction around (I don’t like this as much because it only works once whereas the other one keeps going).

For stuff in drawers or cubbies, you can rotate putting it in the back to achieve similar goal.

There’s a problem with wearing the same 5 outfits?? Crap

I have most of my stuff hanging up in the closet. When I wash things they go on one end (the “back”) of the section (pants are separate from short sleeved shirts are separate from long sleeved shirts are separated from skirts are separated from dresses). I focus on the front of the section for choices. If it turns out certain things are never getting chosen and are getting skipped over again and again, they get donated, because clearly I don’t want to wear them.

ETA: FIFoFum beat me to it! I really do do it though.

ETA2: But actually, unless you are a super stylish type person that wears “fashion” (like, very eye-catching things), I think no one even notices. :upside_down_face:

Line up six or seven shirts in a row on hangers in your closet, and always take the first one on one end. When they’re clean, always put the freshly washed ones on the other hand. Voila, you cycle through shirts in a way that does not correspond with a number of days in a week.

I found that nobody pays any attention to pants, so I don’t bother with them.

I do have most of my stuff hanging, but I’m pretty committed to keeping it in its current “arranged by color and then sleeve length” pattern. I could try turning the hangers around, though.

Definitely not, especially if you end up having a kind of uniform that’s your “look” and removes decision making! But I’m trying to make a conscious effort to branch out a bit.

The times I end up noticing are when I do public-facing things that are on the same day of the week and then realize I’ve had the same shirt on three weeks in a row.

You make a good point!

See, and I find people notice when I decline to wear pants.

Can you pull your outfits on the weekend, including accessories and queue them up for the week? Even if you got 3 - 4 outfits selected in advance you have more time to branch out.

Theoretically that would be good. But I’m not sure I’d actually follow through on it.

Do you pick your outfit the night before? Or in the morning the day of?

Anything you can do ahead of time let’s you think about your goal, rather than falling back to Habits.

I see lots of folks where I like their outfits, but somehow manage to find reasons to not model new choices based on theirs (style, boldness, color, pattern, weight, body shape…).

I almost always decide what to wear in the morning, unless there is a special event where I’d be wearing a themed t-shirt or something.

I also don’t figure out what to take for lunch until right before I leave in the morning.

And 9 times out of 10 I turn up the air-conditioning or heat in my car and try to make that dry my hair while I drive to work.

I notice a theme.

You are SPONTANEOUS! And / or you are a master of “just-in-time” production efficiency

Does this way of functioning in any way bother or harm you? Do you feel stressed doing those tasks in the morning, or do you enjoy the spontaneity of it? Maybe you would like planning in advance, or maybe not! If you like deciding “last minute” I’m sure some of those clothing rotation ideas others have shared could help diversify your use of your work clothing without making you change your preferred way of running your morning, if that’s what you prefer.

Good questions! A little of both, maybe? Like, I don’t like pre-planning a week of dinners because I want to be able to eat whatever I’m in the mood for an not be tied to “it’s stir-fry night” or whatever. But I do not enjoy feeling rushed, so I don’t like when I let that component creep in.

The driving to work with wet hair is 100% tied to deciding to trade 9 minutes of hair drying time with a 9-minute snooze interval on my alarm clock. I did actually get up right away when my alarm clock went off for a full month (mainly because Howie didn’t believe I would do it and I am stubborn AF, also I was giving myself stickers) and I did enjoy having more time in the morning.
