I would take those out of the room entirely for a while. Put a nightlight in the hall and one of those LED nightlight that just plugs in but is otherwise uninteresting in the room. Put a baby gate across the doorway. Be prepared for everything dumpable to be dumped. Also be prepared to ponder the question “Why exactly did I have children?”

It’s going to be a tough week or two.

I just checked through our photos. We changed Duckling’s cot to a toddler bed (took the side off) when he was 20 months old. We left in the room an armchair (it’s a solid beast, not one he could tip), a beanbag, and a mat on the floor. I don’t know where we put his clothing drawers at the time but they weren’t in his room. Caveat: he turned out to be a kid who is easy to fall asleep and would rather tell for me to come get him from the safety of his bed instead of getting up himself most of the time.

His nightlight is a rechargeable silicone animal, so no need to be plugged in.

Run them behind a dresser and anchor the dresser to the wall is what I’ve seen.

It’s this, UNLESS they’re too tall or climbing out. Then it’s a safety issue for them to stay in the crib.

Hey, a thing I kind of remember going through! So much of the baby stuff is already a blur.

  • Non-tippable furniture, making sure things are bolted to the wall as needed.
  • Hiding stuff - He didn’t really understand that he could potentially open his closet doors on his own so we didn’t need to worry about anything in there (out of sight, out of mind).
  • Electricity - All the outlets had sliding outlet covers on them and I think we had one plug in nightlight that was behind the armchair and had the sides blocked off with solid tables he wouldn’t be able to tip, but we also had a usb-charged cordless nightlight.
  • Keeping him in his room - We had a knob cover on his door for years since it was a round door knob, but I also recommend a Door Monkey which will keep the door from opening more than an inch or two. Good for using the hallway light as a nightlight but still keeping them secure.
  • Various quiet toys and books for him to entertain himself with. (Magnatiles seemed great until he would stack them up then smash the tower with a loud crashing sound and he’d cackle with glee. So much for trying to sleep in a few more minutes!)

Ha, that reminds me, my child basically said “Hey mama, watch this!” and then climbed out of his crib for the first time. I said “Oh wow great” and then put him to bed (as it was bedtime) and then woke up before him in the morning, disassembled the fourth side that day after work since it was a crib-to-toddler-bed thing.

Ha ha, that’s exactly why we’ve been gradually proofing her room already. So far she hasn’t done it, but the signs of it beginning over there. I don’t wanna be caught off guard and have a bunch to do.

Oh yeah, this was why we changed Duckling’s bed too.

Thanks for these suggestions. The crib turns into a toddler bed so we need to convert it. We are going to take out all furniture except the rocking chair and a small bookshelf that is attached to the wall. We are going to put the wires behind the bookshelf out of reach.

Keeping him in his room is gonna be tough. Gate and door monkey are not happening because door needs to be closed due to light/noise from my 2 million relatives. I think we can use something to block the lever knob turning on the outside but that makes me nervous too. Yeesh. I guess we could go old-school bolt but man that seems super creepy.

Sadly though I can’t let him wander the hall. Two staircases, both steep.

Swap out the whole door knob for a round one and add the knob cover? A quick search shows indoor knob hardware at $10 or less. You can replace it later to match the rest of the house, just make sure you keep all the parts.

We have these on the bathroom doors and plan to put one on her door

Apparently our door warped in our freshly warm weather and now it is no longer closing properly, so the cat has been pushing in at will. ANOTHER THING TO FIX TODAY.

Please remind me that my child doesn’t actually care what bookcase I buy for him.

He does not, as long as he can pull all the books down and leave them strewn all over the floor.

This isn’t a question - my 2 year old is going to daycare for the first time in 14 months today. She’s super excited for the “school bus”, which is absolutely not a thing

She and her brother have been watching Magic School Bus, and I think that’s the only association with “school” she has, haha. I hope it’s novel enough that she’s not immediately disappointed with school forever.

Awwww happy first day!

Thanks! We only put her in for a half day today, so she didn’t have to do naps at a strange place the first day she was there, and it seems like it went well. No crying, at least, and she played with kids fine

Our son is having a blast playing with other kids again, much less drama at drop off than last year.

How tippy is it and how prone is he to climbing it?

Never has fallen before, he climbs all the things. Maybe I could make sure it’s against a wall? He can’t move it.
