Random Questions, Parenting Edition

It’s very recent, my 12 month old barely missed being able to get doses, so not applicable to a current 2 year old. No worries at all.

Do I need to buy toddler shoes in every half-size or can I skip half sizes? The child in question is 2 and is just now outgrowing size 6.

I’ve never bought a 1/2 size shoe for my son (4). I haven’t seen any of his shoes in 1/2 sizes? I primarily shop target and poshmark (I really like the Merrell sandals but it’s $60 new).

I mainly switched brands, some fit so much bigger and so much smaller we triangulated it that way.

I usually skip half sizes and jump up a whole size at a time, but not strictly (what’s available on Poshmark/eBay, whether brands run big or small, etc.). I try to avoid anything so big it affects their gait or causes them to trip, but since free toes are great and all, I probably err on the side of big.

Halloween question: We’ll be at a daycare friend’s Halloween party most of the night. What’s the etiquette on setting out candy vs. leaving the lights dark? I imagine the expectations are pretty neighborhood-specific but curious to hear how y’all handle that.

In our neighborhood we all go out at the same time, so the families typically leave candy out in a bucket (one please!), because if you’re out getting candy it seems like your house should also have candy. However, lots of houses just leave the lights off and it doesn’t seem rude, we just go to the next.

B1 I skipped several whole sizes but at other times did random brand changes.

B2 I have had to do a LOT of brand switchinf and found some half sizes IRL but he is finally a 6. My rule with him so far has been about walkability. At this point shoes that are too too big cause problems and falls. Maybe buy a whole size up and see if she can walk? If not store and buy smaller

Playful parenting is the best parenting book I’ve read tbh

I want to read this. Will any of it apply with a child who HATES any silliness that isn’t generated by her?

I think so. It’s about following your child’s lead mostly! And about how to interpret how a child’s current play themes or styles represents what they’re working on in their inner world. To some extent, as parents that may feel obvious, but this gives permission to let the play be as intense, weird, dark, wacky as it needs to be without judgement or correction. It’s also helpful to get a therapists take on interpreting complex behavior, since they see so many kids and we have our own blinders.

Excellent, I’ll move it up my TBR! She def initiates play with very clear intentions lol, so if it’s more “play” versus “playful” it’ll probably be different than I was hoping BUT more applicable  if that makes sense lol

I think the only half sizes I’ve seen were with the Nike brand, which run SUPER small anyway. We always just go up to the next size. Sometimes at once upon a child I find half sizes and I just throw them in with the same normal size.

Is there a specific respiratory rate for 4-5 year olds that is emergency department NOW?

Kid had dexamethasone (oral steroid) the last 2 midnights (so still in his system) ventolin every 2-4 hours. I was expecting to go to ER again tonight, but I guess I’m wondering if we need to go sooner.

Shameless @Bracken_Joy bat signal here but I know there are other people with personal or professional experience

Oh and same Q for 2yo for a few days from now. Because the results I google are always for ranges that are just a tiny bit of a problem.

Departure from norm and work of breathing are key things I’d look for here. Has it gotten worse, has it gotten worse quickly. What are the retractions like, how much work of breathing, how lethargic or anxious etc. I don’t know if there’s an absolute number I’d point to, but look at the whole respiratory picture. And as always with breathing, go on the side of “when in doubt, yes ER”

WebMD was the only specific number RR I found and they put it for 1-5 at 40 breaths per minute. I obviously wouldn’t put webmd as a top of the heap resource, but it gave a number. Still, I’d look at whole clinical picture for sure. I’ve had ped patients where as low as 9 breaths per min was baseline and as high as 60. So I think the rest of the clinical picture really matters since rate of in and out is such a small wedge of the whole equation.

Thank you. He definitely went down fast, just closer to 5pm than the 730pm or 11pm I had tentatively scheduled. Bags are packed and I’ll give it a few minutes in case that works

Best of luck

I hope it works. But I think Pumpkin’s last round we woke her and took her in because even packing bags and putting to bed didnt work. Breathing I couldnt find a number for then either but it was definitely “wrong for Pumpkin” even if that might’ve been right for another.

We delayed and are here. More puffer, more oral steroid.

But the first big improvement we saw after triage gave tylenol. So we need to alternate tylenol/advil. (We gave advil at home).

Now after the oral steroid he is completely fine and we are hoping for discharge. But also probably a plan maybe. And I found out that I have been dispensing puffers wrong for years. So probably why my kids don’t respond as well to them!

After each puff you are supposed to remove from the aerochamber and reshake before reinserting and the next puff.
