I find the merino t-shirts, short and long sleeved ones from Kathmandu quite good. And they’re generally discounted everytime I go looking to buy one.

Some way to easily and strongly visually indicate that an electric stove coil burner is hot, that does NOT involve leaving an empty pan on a hot burner.

Currently my mind is just envisioning a ceramic duck dressed in a hat and galoshes, a la A Wind in the Willows, holding a sign that says “NO” and placed on the hot burner. That’s a very specific vision that I probably can’t acquire without also becoming an excellent sculptor, so I’d love to know if others have found a good system.

Not in my rental apartment, alas :wink: (If we ever buy a house and it has electric stove hookups, will definitely be looking into induction stovetops though.)

My husband and I definitely joked about hiding the range in a closet at the last rental we had and buying an induction in the meantime :joy: (not that we had a closet for that, but still lol). I feel your pain! I have no solutions other than snark.

Put a kettle on the hot one

Leave it on high until you’re rest to turn off off- it’ll glow red until the real cool down starts.

So, I basically never leave a coil burner on without something on it. This is instead for after you’re done cooking, and the burner is “open” but still hot. Ours, at least, doesn’t glow unless it’s actively heating, but stays pretty hot for a good chunk of time afterwards. (I guess for background – I don’t like leaving pans on the burner after I’m done cooking, because I don’t want to further cook food that’s still in the pan OR accidentally damage the pan by leaving it empty on a still-hot burner. I always take them and place them on a cold burner to cool down.)

However, that leaves a hot burner open and I also want that to be very, very clear…

Yeah, got it now. I guess I don’t worry about it? I grew up with coils and would never touch one or set anything on it without checking. Those are lessons I learned viscerally as a kid.

Actually I would never set anything on one at all if I wasn’t planning to cook on it. It’s too big a pain to clean done in there to use it for a prep surface.

They do make metal burner covers, but you still have to wait for them to cook a bit or you’ll scorch the cover.

Husband is over here thinking up elaborate schemes for a color-changing fluid in a sealed Pyrex flask if you want to get fancy.

Growing up, we did actually move the kettle to the hot burner. Now I sometimes put a wet pot there to dry.

Oh yes I forgot, but this is in fact the way to dry any cast iron you may have rinsed before reseasoning it.

We had burner covers. Any burner not covered was in use or still hot.

Ooooh yeah this is what we did at the house we had in HS that had coils. Encourages you to wash your cast iron right away too, easiest to clean and dry that way :joy:
