In Svalbard, the sun rises on April 20th, and doesnā€™t set until September.

Which then implies a more problematic counterpoint from September through April :grimacing::grimacing::grimacing:

And polar bears are basically the opposite of black cats.

From September through April thereā€™s at least moments of twilight

Well thatā€™sā€¦ something! I have extremely good blackout curtains and eye masks in my life so thr lack of sunlight would be my real problem (even Portland is too dark for meā€¦I kept getting offers to move there at my first job but kept staying in Phoenix lol)

If I were more rich or more scared* I would be looking more seriously into a golden visa from Portugal. They removed the real estate option and I donā€™t have $300K to drop into their economy without getting a house in return to live in. But Iā€™m also not ready to make that drastic of a step. Time will tell if we are making a big mistake and should have been more proactive about getting outā€¦

*I am scared, but still hopeful to see how a rash of lawsuits and other things might make a difference. I know some arenā€™t convinced the law can do anything but Iā€™m choosing to believe it can still make a difference.

Ok, how about the Netherlands?

Requires 4500 Euro business investment.

I believe DAFT also applies to the Dutch Antilles if the Caribbean is more your vibe!

Be aware that the Netherlands currently have a far right government, however. (probably still less scary than the current US state in my opinion, but just making sure everyone knows that much of Europe is divided and trending more right now)

My friends and I have this as a recurring conversation, esp after their work in the disinfo space. If youā€™re planning to move somewhere, do your research, and not just on if you can move there. What does the politics look like, and what does healthcare look like. My 3-degrees-removed circle has some horror stories about the current state of care in the UK. I also have some feelings about no longer having the ability to vote on local issues.

yeah, my husband is a UK citizen from scotland and we think about moving back sometimes but from what we hear, the NHS is in a bad way, and weā€™re getting to that age where healthcare is more and more important. thatā€™s only one of the reasons iā€™m not planning to leave the states (besides most of the people i love being here, including trans friends and family members, and i want to be here to support them.)

also, fuck them fascists. why should i have to leave when they are the ones who suck?

Also, doesnā€™t Svalbard require you to leave if you are old or seriously ill, because thereā€™s no actual hospital?

Galaxy brain level.

Yā€™all how does anyone think the FDIC works anyway? There are know your customer rules at the bank. THE GOVERNMENT KNOWS ALL YOUR BANK ACCOUNT INFO ANYWAY SWITCHING DOESNā€™T CHANGE THAT

This is also true if you hold an american passport even if you bank overseas - the US extracts that info from foreign govā€™ts already - which is why as an american it can be hard to get overseas bank accounts because itā€™s a ton of extra work for the banks.

ANd it costs money to give up your US passport. And you pretty much canā€™t if you still have student loans

Yup, Iā€™ve talked in my journal that DH has German citizenship and weā€™ve considered moving there or possibly elsewhere in Europe, but there is a lot of scary stuff happening there too. So much nationalism, so much interference from bad actors and muskrats. It sucks :frowning:

Yeah, my Brazilian citizenship isnā€™t making me feel super secure

On a positive note: I have joined a union. We donā€™t have collective bargaining and itā€™s kind of steep (at my income level working half-time, itā€™s $23 a month) but itā€™s kind of what there is, yā€™know?

Our work as library staff is really important and I think we need to look out for each other so we can keep doing it. We are the paid resistance!

Iā€™m chipping in an extra $5 a month to help coworkers who might, for instance, be facing eviction or deportation.

Also if any of our European forumers here want to chime in and say that things may be trending right, but whatā€™s happening in the US could never happen in their country, I would be very interested in that info!

I have been curious about this! Good to know. How do the super secret offshore bank accounts work? Are they all through shell corporations?
