NPR shows have called out Smoot-Hawley specifically before in relation to these new tariffs. I’ve noticed lately they seem to be trying exceptionally hard to be unbiased. I mean, that’s good journalism but also disappointing to me when the facts support one side over the other (though of course I AM biased so…)
And news rooms have been steadily gutted for over a decade. They’re working on skeleton crews basically
Yes, it’s clear to me that one thing I can do in this is support journalism.
I would be kind of surprised if your leaders, and leaders in Europe and elsewhere, don’t quietly start taking steps towards a more robust and diversified economy that’s less dependent on the US anyway. The US has now shown itself twice to be less than reliable.
The MAGA crowd will probably never realize what happened.
Hey I work for publicly media not owned by any oligarchs and we’re doing our best! Also high ranking dems are calling it out? They’re screaming based on the press releases I am getting.
And even the NYtimes (which has its issues no pun intended ) published a very very in depth piece on Elon’s takeover.
Support your local public media! We really out here trying. It’s a LOT
Thank you this actually gave me something constructive to do today. I just set up a recurring donation to my local NPR station.
Thank you for doing what you can, and I’m sorry I painted you in with the rest of them. NPR and BBC are the only places I go to for news these days; it is really appreciated.
There’s a lot of great journalists working for billionaire-owned paper conglomerates trying so so hard to do this work in an increasingly hostile world with skeleton staffs.
The funding freeze story was broken by an independent journalist!
Yes, this here. Canada has become too complacent about its proximity to the US. I am a bit concerned about CBSA etc. sharing border information, etc with Americans at the moment. What with Trump saying he wants to annex Canada. And that he hasn’t exactly put ethical people in charge.
Thank you!
If you also need to be constructive but with cookies I recommend buying Girl Scout cookies
In addition to NPR, I find ProPublica’s work to be great.
My cookies from trans girl scouts came in the mail this week - thank you for the link @anomalily.
I am adding “donate to local public broadcasting” to my list of possible values-based actions, thanks!
My dad stockpiles ammunition. It seems less kooky now than it did a few months ago…
Does he actually care? I mean, I think he’s pretty clueless but he loves chaos.
Really enjoyed this read. Need a little slice of encouragement amidst all the seeming success of the Trump/Musk coup.
(Here’s the written version:

I feel compelled to clarify that my dad stockpiles ammunition because he thinks it is something that will hold value in the inevitable collapse of civilization (he’s a 4th Turning guy). Not because he plans to shoot a whole lot of people. I mean, he’s a gun guy for sure but he thinks he would be able to trade it for food to feed his family.
I mean, it’s a dark thought but the logic makes more sense than buying gold…
A number of my friends are talking about switching banks since Elon has all our account numbers now. Is that a thing we are supposed to be doing? Wondering if I should at least put my efund somewhere else so that the government can’t drain it. Maybe in vanguard money market? Does he have our retirement account numbers too?
