Was driving past a closed Amazon Go yesterday and had the conversation of “man, I’m glad they didn’t succeed at that level of surveillance, and also wtf is up with people who were happy with that level of surveillance as long as they didn’t have to talk to a cashier?!”

The thing that really got me about the Amazon Go places is I just assumed all the cameras were fed into a big AI black box (actually “machine learning” because this was prior to the AI hype train we’re currently one) to figure it all out automatically. But it turns out all the video was sent to overseas workers who watched the footage and generated a receipt manually.
ETA: ok apparently there was some level of automation of the stores, but required far more manual review than expected. source
