Honestly I was so mad at the idea of accepting wire mother too I didn’t even get to the part about the lesbian couple.
Within Harlow, wire mother was a cruelty, a requirement to survive, because you must have food, but horrible for the monkeys. No child deserves that, even as part of a pair.

I apologize for my gendered language, but I was only thinking in the context of Harlow,which presents two mother’s, father was not part of the experiment, henced used the term maternal. But the mothers are inanimate objects and thus not gendered themselves.
In a family with no mother, whether it be one or more Dad, I would still hope the child had the aspect the cloth mother brought, which is love and comfort. Whether it is maternal or paternal, no child should be stuck with wire. The cruelty in the experiment proved that food alone is not enough.
