Meme-ing our way through

I have a friend/former coworker who is xiennial and he is team “5 2 minute long voice memos instead of a call”. But he’s in radio and has a great voice so I don’t mind so much

Since having the tot especially I get so annoyed by videos or voice memos I have to do with sound. I don’t have headphones around usually. I don’t know what my toddler will overhear. Just. Stop.

I literally just coached a friend through telling someone that they couldnt sent voice memos anymore, please use voice to text. Whyyyyyy would people think voice memos are OK for the recipient

Everyone is so different: one of my favorite thrills is seeing a voice memo from one of my friends pop up. I love them. I’m sure if they were not my preference I’d let them know and they’d stop, but usually voice memo means I’m getting a funny story.

If it was fun stories that would be more fun, but often it’s when her kids are screaming so she wants to get a convo over with and like. I don’t want to hear your kids scream either pls, let’s just pause the convo until later :grimacing::face_with_spiral_eyes:

See, that sounds nice. Friend i helped was getting long voice memos with information she needed to re-listen for several times to get down on paper for herself while running after her toddler

I have a friend that often sends voice memos and I’m like 50/50 that’s never getting listened to.

I like voice memos too! And video calls. But probably because most of my friends live far away, so it’s always fun to hear their voices.

But otherwise…if it’s work or just a pal I talk to all the time, I’d much rather 50 messages haha

That’s my big problem too- I can’t listen to them right then. And then I forget they exist. Friend’s last 2 haven’t been listened to, ooos.

Voice memos are the shit. You gotta have friends who know how to use the voice memo. Excellent use cases

  • Your kid is babbling about some shit and you need to show your pride and/or pain
  • Your friends hands dont work well and they want to be able to just press play and listen and hold record and talk without needing to be trapped in a phone call
  • You have meetings/tasks that would interrupt a call and want to have a coherent conversation that requires intonation and also would be murder to type
  • You want your friend to hear your desperation
  • You want your friend to hear how hard you are laughing because of/at them
  • You are in target shopping and wanna see your surroundings and not your phone
  • You are driving and you can send a voice memo at a stop light with more info than a text

Guys it is almost endless

I mean, i also dont watch TV or youtube or listen to podcasts because if theres sound i get pulled away from it. Text i can hold my place. Like i have to be still to listen and often im watching kids TV if I AM still, and cant always let my kid listen?.. Its not just voice memos, (which lol dont put actual information i need in one of those, your use cases are all fun and not “let’s organise a thing!” Which i appreciate), i just dont do Things With Sound  hmmm. Interesting.

Although born in 1983, my brother was Gen X at heart and used to leave our older sister honest-to-God voice mails about totally random shit, like the scientific name for the key ingredient in Super Glue. He’s no longer with us, she still has them, and they’re priceless! She interspersed them in his memorial playlist, like a TV show soundtrack album or a live concert CD.

I cant seem to save actual voicemails to anything! They just disappear. I 2ould love to have saved a couple of mine.

My voicemail message specifically asks people not to leave me a message. Just text me like a normal person, I urge my callers.

But voice memos from beloved friends? I get to hear their voices!

The two are not the same.

My issue with voice memos is that the only way I have received voice memos is on Facebook messenger and it appears in line with text messages. So unlike voicemail, there’s not an indicator showing I haven’t listened reminding me to go listen.

Ummm…are voice memos different from voicemail? :grimacing:
