Surprise video calls are the worst. Dude I probably havenāt showered in two days Iām probably eating and have stains on my shirt my hair probably looks like I greased it and Iām definitely not wearing a bra.
Also we need to remove the assumed binary of ābusy or availableā
Video calls are the worst. If another boomer or even Gen X says āI figured a call would be easier than sending 30 messagesā. No. Not easier. Wrong. Iāll take the messages please. I have a colleague who is actually my age and I give him so much shit when he actually calls. Like dude. How old are you? Could this call have been 50 messages? Yes? Then donāt call.
Plus you canāt send a gif by phone.
I am feeling very validated because my wife is a big āwhy donāt people answer my FaceTimes right away/why would I text them in advanceā person and she is wrong!
Lol I am Gen X and a call is never easier than 50 texts.
(But I am end of Gen X, I guess that makes a differenceā¦)
Iām extreme elder X and Iām def on team 50 messages. And I donāt answer unscheduled calls unless they are from my parents, brother, or husband. Or, as happened today, if I suspect I vaguely remember that number as the construction line for the people who are finally running high-speed Internet to my house (it was, and the rep actually thanked me for taking the call and answered all my questions and emailed me the scope of work, so).
And I donāt turn on my camera even if you call with camera on, you heathen. (Unless youāre my mother, then I have to.) Why does my Silent Gen mother even make video calls?
it all depends on who it is for me (gen x). if itās someone i like or love, a call or even a video call is a delightful surprise.
if itās someone i work with who communicates poorly in written form, i would prefer a call to get it out of the way without having to decipher nonsense messages. but letās schedule it, please, and have an agenda.
anyone else, text me.
Omg no. I will not do 50 texts. 3 texts in and Iām calling (but not video.)
You can all hate me and idgaf
Well you see if she is silent on a voice call communication canāt happen so she needs video.
/S
Nah Iām with you. Two texts yesterday between a former coworker and myself about a plethora of job openings in my department, and I called him. It would have taken hours to answer his questions āwhy are there so many openings, what is going on there?ā was the starter (two promotions and huge growth in the region, resulting in six jobs is the short answer, but the long answer? Nope that needed more nuance than a text can convey).
I hope so badly that he applies, and his partner applies too. He is the coworker I miss emailing across the office the most.
A couple of texts is fine, after that just friggin call me. But donāt video call me!
This was me after my $1.30/hr raise in the new year.
I am an elder millennial and I would MUCH rather have a call if the alternative is 50 messages. But I would prefer to have 5 messages and 0 calls.
