Well now I’m just curious about convent and monastery food offerings, haha.
Yea, me too! Also I want to to asia again Well, hong kong in November 2023 hopefully.
I’m hoping we can go on a trip in 2023 too. I think 2017 was the last time we traveled!
I’m going to new zealand next week so I can’t really complain.
Woah! That’s a massive trip!!! Didn’t you also just go somewhere in winter? I feel like I remember cute pictures.
Yea, I’ve been on several international trips since september last year when things started to re-open, but asia has been mostly closed. SSO is back to traveling about 50% of the time, so I tag along when trips are fun. It’s pretty short just a lil over a week. It’s winter there so not much open
Correct lol. I’d take it.
I think my trips look a lil less fancy than that because I’m so cheap, but I cannot pass up free hotels when possible. And the flight to finland was $280 freaking dollars round trip from the US.
New Zealand was on points (and then SSO has the work hotel) and it was really hard to find tickets on points because they’re barely reopened. So I “have” to do a layover in hawaii both ways. Ohhhh welll
The compassion in this episode was so so good. Doesn’t stop me from being put on edge by these people in my life. I found it interesting that it’s a new phenomenon because it definitely happened in my family, though they were Quakers first rather than one of the other flavours of Christianity, and my understanding was Quakers (of the sort around here, can’t speak of others) already had a “spirituality” component that my great grandmother and grandmother followed towards all the other spirituality/ essential oils/ crystals/ past lives/ scammy self help books back in the 70’s-80’s (i assume, i wasn’t born so my timeline is fuzzy). My grandma is definitely the sort who would be fully in the QAnon pipeline if she was my age today and i have a friend who definitely is in the general area of it, who reminds me of my grandma on a lot of levels. I need to listen to the episode again a few times, and I think they mentioned it? But something I’ve observed to be consistent with the people pulled in is that they have the sort of traumatic background that involves authority fucking with their ability to actually judge things for themselves and QAnon promises them this “follow your intuition” and “the REAL truth” (and some other catchphrases I can recognise but can’t think of), while continuing to prevent them actually developing a sense of self trust.
ETA wow I had a lot to say. Its part of my family’s intergenerational trauma and we are still working through it 🫤
Edited again to clarify my observations not general information
That’s fascinating about the Quakers. And a great observation about the anti-authoritarian thing. Especially bc a lot of ex-military also get sucked in. Kind of makes sense…
A lot of buddhists and vedists ban caffeine, alcohol, onion and garlic - sometimes only for those on a monastic path sometimes for everyone
lol you guys in this talk of temple food i keep remembering this one meditation retreat i went to high up in the rocky mountains that was a buddhist center. the weather was wild and all the food was vegan and one night i had a beautiful spiritual experience after meditating for like 10 hours, and dinner was delicious indian food, and i went to bed and slept like an angel … until the middle of the night when i actually woke myself up with the sound and smell of my own farts. apparently altitude + vegan-level fiber + indian spices = lots of nuclear things happening inside me. i was mortified and kind of impressed? and really, really glad i didnt have a roommate!
just out of curiosity, was your retreat in Crestone??
It was at the Shambhala Mountain Center, which my spiritual community rented for our retreat and which seems to have a much more interesting history than I realized.
I am laughing so hard, thank you
Sounds like you were getting a lot of stuff out.
lol yes very liberating!
Has anyone else started listening to Michael’s other podcast? It’s called You’re Wrong About. The other co-host isn’t nearly as charismatic as Aubrey, and because of that the banter isn’t quite so simpatico, but the content is interesting and it’s still a good listen.
Side note but does anyone else love Aubrey’s laugh?
Yes. I actually found Maintenance Phase through that podcast! I’ve been listening to You’re Wrong About for ages. I like Sarah Marshal a lot, actually. Her presenting style is definitely different, but there’s something really earnest about her.
Oh totally earnest! And I love the topics and everything. I just find her a bit flat or down or something? IDK. Maybe it’s because I went straight from MP to YWA.
