Sounds very self-important when I read it back. Idk.
My flaws are that I am depressed and need medication and therapy to manage that and it covers 100% of my life, work, relationships and interactions lmao
IM DONE NOW
Ok I’ll do this
the answer I’m looking for when you made a mistake is that you own that it was your mistake and that you did something to avoid similar situations in the future.
Since your company is so weird, you don’t want to bring that stuff into it. So "I assumed that person X would pick up thing after a brief comment during a call, but they didn’t, so now I make sure to follow up afterwards to have a documented agreement/I check in midway through to see if they have any questions instead of waiting until the due date’
or ‘I’d been given a quick training and thought I understood the new process, but it turns out I didn’t. So now the first time I do something new I make sure to leave enough time so that I can show another person what I’ve done and get a thumbs up instead of being scared that others will judge me if I ask for help at the beginning’
Oh that second thing is real and I can map to my life. Thank you!!
Hello! Any fellow job hunters here??
Yes hi! I might not be in a good place to change jobs anymore due to ~~~personal reasons but I do have one app in I’m waiting to hear about
Haven’t really wanted to but I’ve been furloughed for a bit over 3 months, and sometimes expenses are really haunting me. Like today’s visit from a plumber… which is just the beginning. Ugh.
So that was July. He took another interview with the same company this week, but not at all sure he’d take it if he gets an offer. The business is going well. It would have to be a whole heck of a lot of money.
I haven’t been applying or looking, really, but boy do I need to. I really do not want to do my job. Every morning I hear the alarm and I have to fight with myself to get up and go there. Again.
The university hiring system kicked out an automatic email inviting me to apply to another role with the job title Library Specialist so I went ahead and applied. All my information was still in the system and I didn’t even write a new cover letter—same responsibilities listed except some more bits about fixing broken books? Sure lol why not. I updated the date in the corner. The end
Again not sure I will be in a place to change jobs, but going through some motions when they’re easy
Nice job on applying!! That’s good practice to apply anyway, you never know what could happen! You’re motivating me to actually apply to jobs today, I’ve been stuck in browse mode and can’t get myself to actually apply
Does anyone have favorite job boards to check out besides LinkedIn/Indeed? Or job search “hacks”? In the past I’ve been fortunate to get jobs through referrals and having a strong network, but in recent years I’ve pretty much lost that network as I became more disabled, stepped away from the previous industry I worked in, and feel like I’m starting from scratch now. The job search is very intimidating to me (especially in this market, yikes!), so any advice is welcomed! Thank you.
Depends on your industry? My wife and I were just talking about how different this is between our fields. She’s a copywriter so Linkedin is where a lot gets posted, the recruiters are, etc but also she’s mostly gotten jobs through local connections. There are only so many local firms, but remote work is very common for her field now.
Whereas with my field in libraries, a lot of the hiring is done through local government, universities, or directly through the library’s website. Sometimes it’s very tediously clicking through everyone’s Jobs pages to check for openings.
Indeed used to be really good at scraping info from those websites & at least getting it into one searchable place but I think it’s gotten less useful for my area in the last year or so. Sometimes it’ll turn up nonprofit stuff I haven’t thought of before so I probably won’t abandon using it, but I definitely have seen some local scam listings pop up so I always go to the business website/social media to confirm the opening exists rather than trust Indeed anymore.
Emailed about the city library job, expected to hear at some point that hiring was impacted by the city hiring freeze but didn’t get official communication about it so wanted to confirm
Ohh this is a good tip, to check the company website versus relying solely on Indeed. Sucks that there are scam listings on top of like, the normal job hunt stress lol.
I’m not picky about industry—I used to work in tech but given how unstable it is I’m not committed to it. I’ve done community management, communications, social media, marketing, etc, so I’m hoping to bring those skills to a small business or a slower paced org (no more startups for me lol). I feel like I’m in that “career transition” but don’t know what I’m transitioning to.
At this point I just need something to pay the bills, so I’ll keep checking Indeed but also look at websites like you mentioned. Thank you!
Gotcha! Given that…my other tips would be to look for business networking groups like One Million Cups (local businesses & nonprofits give quick talks, can help you get the lay of the land sometimes), see if there are business coworking spaces that do lunch & learn type stuff (build awareness of more businesses in area), and definitely check the state channels - where does the workforce development funding in your area go, are there state universities with small business division info (for training or for networking; mine will host job fairs for small businesses specifically), does the local library system do any business/entrepreneur support (mine partners with the SBA for free training classes) that could lead to new info/connections.
As an introvert, let me be clear that even though this is all Best Practice I would absolutely not do it all at once.
I also save job descriptions even when not job searching of stuff that looks cool. If nothing else, it starts to establish a pattern of possible search terms or industry common phrases that might not be obvious otherwise.
Wow, this is all really good advice — thank you!! I will definitely check out local groups and events—I think that will help a ton to get an idea of what’s out there.
