yeah, the pork loin by itself would have been $20 & it was a heritage breed. it was the first time I’ve actually seen the bag available - I don’t know if they added another bag off-schedule or the person who picked it up yesterday at the regular 715pm posting decided to cancel their order. My current inclination is to just snag it any time I can, ignoring my self-imposed ‘only once a week’ 2G2G rule.
I would 100% make this exception as well. The eggs alone nearly cost that much, lol!
Great scores!
Fresh Nova Scotia strawberries - $3.99/quart today. We bought 16 quarts and have 11 in the freezer. More to process tomorrow. Our year’s supply.
I felt the pain today. Over $300 CAD in groceries. But $175 was for meat from the discount meat market for the next three months. Lots of stocking up on clearance items at the regular grocery store too. Stocked up on bread items for company. Huge bag of sugar for jam, jelly and pickle making. Vitamins will come off the regular bill, as they are paid for by health.
The usual treat for Hubby and I at the discount meat market. Might have to stop that. Didn’t want to bake though, and heat up the house. I notice there’s no amounts on the discount meat market receipt. There were 9 large skinless, boneless chicken breasts, 9 pounds of lean ground beef, the hams are small - about a pound each, the whole chicken is about 3 lbs., 9 boneless pork loin chops,3 strips of ribs, and the breaded scallops are a treat for company, who like seafood. We’ve never had croquettes, but at more than half price off, we thought we would try them. Also salmon cakes were more than 50% off. I thought I’d try their fish cakes too. I’ve been unsuccessful making my own.

Just got another box from butcher box. I have to say, the real deal with this membership which makes it worthwhile IMO (assuming you can afford fancy organic/grass fed stuff, I mean) are the members-only sales offerings. I spent about $98 on sale meat on top of my $119 box for a total spend of $217 or around $7.48 a pound. It’s about 29 pounds of meat! I’m also not purely shopping the sales based on the absolute lowest cost per pound, I’m getting things I want (like the shrimp). I’ll let y’all know how the quality of the seafood is since I haven’t had it yet. If it’s good I’m going to make it more regular whenever it’s on sale!
Yes! So I started with the normal box for a family of 2. Then after I got it I went through the process to quit and cited that I could get meat for less money elsewhere and was offered “the chef box” or something, which isn’t listed on the site but I assume they offer to everyone who is going to quit for the same reason I gave. So my box is less expensive but I don’t pick what’s in it. In addition to the chef box or cook box or whatever I get access to member’s only sales, and those I pick and choose whatever. When I signed up the promo was 2 lb. of ground beef free for life, so I also get that each month. They also carry readymade things and chicken nuggets and stuff but I’ve never tried those so ymmv.
flashfood had 200g feta for $3 again, so I picked up four. The app claimed best before mid July, but the package is June 2023. And the packaging claims it is 2x100g, so hopefully better for our small household than the full 200g or 400g packages that I sometimes struggle to finish before they start to go off. (this is also why I didn’t get the 1kg package)
And since we were at that grocery store (imo the saddest location of the chain in our city), we checked out the meat section and got three pre-seasoned 2lb pork shoulder cuts for $7 each, aka 50% off. They may be sad, but they are much more likely to have discount meat than our fancier location.
$12 + $20.97 in pre-buying for future us
8 dollars on too good to go
The stone fruit is being stewed up right now for upcoming breakfasts - 3 peaches, 4 plums, an apricot. The apricot wasn’t salvageable (also didn’t taste of anything) but everything else was. The shadowy one probably didn’t help by initially trying to squeeze all of it into a backpack.
Sandwich was eaten at a park just by the store, which was nice because we had tried a new route there and google had been misled about a certain path still existing, so we were running about 30 minutes behind schedule and it was looking like a very late lunch. (On the other hand we got to see goats and geese and a chipmunk and a downy woodpecker by taking the detour).
The tomato is very very large. There are 3 turkey meatballs in that $15 container. ETA: which is why the stores on a this stretch of street are traditionally known as the Five Thieves. ETA2: I was unfair, the meatballs are very large, and I will eat one for dinner on rice.
I ordered from Amazon fresh for the first time! This order was $36 plus I gave a $5 tip.
Pros: they use recyclable bags, which is better than king Soopers pickup. Convenient. Some items cheaper than at normal grocery. Very easy interface for price comparisons on the web browser.
Cons: limited options for some items (no normal things of celery, only expensive pre-cut and washed celery in snack container, etc). Some out of stock items (but this is happening everywhere). I still have to go to the grocery store today to get the items Amazon didn’t have in stock.
Please ignore the mess behind the groceries. We had just dished up lunch
Went grocery shopping today. Mega disappointed. It was $70 for two bags of groceries. The store managers have jacked up the prices on the basic items used to make food products in the home. Almost everything is double the price it was last year. I am angry and resigned at the same time.
In good news though, my sister from BC is a mushroom hunter and found a good number of morels this year. She’s dried most of them and left a gift for me with my other sister in NB. Now all I have to do is connect with sis in NB…once her household is over Covid.
Here’s my grocery receipt for today…
I’m SO jealous. Blueberries are my #1 favorite fruit. Plz send me a bucket.
I highly recommend moving to Oregon or Washington we get lots of berries this time of year. It’s lovely. We’ll freeze some.
I used to go to Oregon in the summertime and I spent so much of my time snagging free blackberries, which are in my top 3 favorite berries, haha.
Haha yes I have SUCH a love hate with blackberries out here. Environmental disaster, obviously, they’re eating the state whole, but holy crap delicious I used to make money summers in high school picking and selling to neighbors, too.
Since moving away, I’ve delighted in embarrassing my childhood friends by stopping at every blackberry hedge to eat. Especially on Sauvie Island where I swear they’re bigger and juicier and warmer in the sun and my friends pretend not to know me
