This is the biggest flex. I also didn’t know you could freeze grains to kill bugs. Not that worried about bugs, but love the idea for insurance.
Oh! Just spotted nuts in your freezer too, does that help them keep longer?
Yes, freezing nuts keeps the high fat ones, in particular, better for longer.
Noted! I don’t tend to buy large quantities of nuts but this is good to know if I spot a sale.
Next up…kitchen cupboards: also in need of reorganization.
Above the stove: oil, vinegar, extra cereal and crackers.
Spice cabinet with extra glass storage above. I have over 75 jars of spices. I have the back ones sitting up on 2x4s.
Extra spices and spice overflow. In a small drawer beside the spice cupboard.
Will continue in next post…
Rest of kitchen cupboards…
This is over the tea/coffee/hot chocolate station on the tray on the counter. The lowest shelf is small appliances and kitchen tools too big for my drawers. There is a box of crackers and some leftover rice wrappers, as well as sprouting seeds.
The second shelf is grains, pasta and almond milk, which I prefer to cow milk.
The third shelf is canned goods storage and extra product I use to refill other containers. There are also two huge bags of black beans and kidney beans split into smaller gallon size bags. I’m cooking for two. I make up a big batch of beans (one gallon of dry beans) at a time and freeze them in 2 cup amounts.
The above cupboard is my baking cupboard. Lowest shelf is baking supplies, second shelf is more baking supplies. Plus dried fruit and frequently used nuts.
The third shelf is food storage again, mostly for the foods in this cupboard, but I can see some strays in there. There’s maple syrup, molasses, sugar, canned tuna, cornmeal, corn flour, etc.
This is the cupboard over the fridge. It is Hubby’s domaine, as I can’t reach it, and houses mostly his breakfast food. Though I must admit more than passing curiosity about the mustard! I see the cupboards need some organization too.
I really love my spice rack! Seems like you have a system that works for you, but happy to link you to the listing!
ETA: buy link!
No wall space in this kitchen for that beautiful rack! Not even the back of a door. We have a door to the deck that is all glass window from top to bottom. I am envious!
Shoot, sorry for the unintentional brag! I just love it so much and lived with them in baskets and cabinets for a while so want to spread the love!
I think you should link to it anyways. Others might be interested. I’d actually need two of those for all my spices.
I almost forgot! One last photo of our basement pantry. It’s mostly filled with empty jars at this point, but here’s the part that’s left with food in it…
Bottom shelf is all part of the remains of my home canning for the winter.
Second shelf left: apple cider vinegar, homemade vanilla and almond extracts, and lots and lots of tubs of honey. My sister and her hubby keep bees. To the right of the upright is more canning and jars of honey. I think I need some honey recipes!
Third shelf: sugar and camping cooler.
That’s it for food here! For two people we’re outfitted for a while. But we have children and their spouses in the area who may need help sometime. So I keep a bit extra.
I also gift home canning to family and friends, so a large chunk of the canning is gone at this point…over 75%.
Today’s grocery haul. My shop for the rest of the month. Other than this it will be just milk and eggs. This is Canadian dollars.
I reorganized my freezers today with plastic bins for the upright freezer and different coloured recyclable cloth grocery bags for the chest freezer. So beef is in the red bag, pork in the black, chicken is in the green one, Etc. I looked at all the dates on the meat/fish/poultry and pulled anything with a date before the end of November up into the basket to be used sooner than the rest. I should have done this a lot sooner!
There’s a good cookie recipe, “Honey Drop Cookies” I used to love in Joy of Cooking. I’m not sure where my copy is, but if I find it and the recipe is there, I’ll post it.
What’s HMart?
HMart is a huge Korean grocery store chain, like Patel Brothers but Korean, basically.
Yeah HMart also had a lot of central American produce too! And they sell all kinds of cuisines: Korean, Japanese, Thai etc etc imports from all over. It’s awesome for easy grain based meals! So many frozen dumpling options (which I can’t eat because I’m gluten free) but frozen rice cakes, dry rice noodles, cheapest tofu place I can find, etc. And the stuff like the option of seriously what must be almost 50 sesame oil varieties. The “specialty” mushrooms were priced pretty much like standard US mushroom varieties, unlike at a Whole Foods. I’m vegetarian but all the fish and butcher stuff looks so fresh, a lot of it is sold pre marinated for a not ridiculous markup. I’d only been once before several years ago, but my city has a very large HMart that I learned is clearly worth going to, although it’s a very involved transit trip for me.
This is what $50 of spices from The Spice House looks like. A good blend (ha, spice jokes) of “necessity” restocking and new fun ingredients to play with.
Edit: Lake Shore Drive blend, cocoa nibs, ground cumin, sesame seeds, turmeric, whole nutmegs, and almond extract.
Tell me about the Spice House. Where is it? What’s it’s deal? Should I buy all my spices there?
