And you suffer as I do- berries for toddlers brutal on the grocery budget, but easy snacks and a sure fire way to get them to consume nutrient dense produce.
Today was my mega shopping day! I buy meat about once ever three months and today was meat day. I also went to my produce store and I ended up buying some kitchen wares too but I broke it all out for pricing. Iām really pleased with my totals!
Produce store
ALLLL the other stuff! The $70 is for the kitchen things and the $182 is for all the food in the next picture. Look at all the meat and seafood!
She just ate an entire pint of blueberries for dinner. There were many other options on her plate but she chose blueberries only and kept asking for āmore yum yumsā
We had a solid 1/2 cup of blueberries for snack (and ignored the cheese), then went to the neighbors house for his birthday and she hadā¦ wait for itā¦ more blueberries.
Went to the farmersā market yesterday. Probably spent too much money, but August is the best month for produce in my area. We got: eggplant (to use in pasta this week), poblanos (to roast for the freezer), fava beans (braised in tomato sauce and frozen), apples and berries (to eat this week), kale (TBD), corn (TBD), zucchini (umā¦ also TBD). I also got a chicken and some fresh bread.
I took a picture of our fridge because I love when others do that:
Fresh fava beans?! LUCKY!
Yes! Whenever I see them I buy them. I braise them for hours in a tomato, wine, fresh herb sauce and theyāre incredible.
That sounds so good!
I spent a lot on groceries this week, but it was my own doing, haha. I wanted to try some fun fancy convenience stuff and I also stocked up on some sale things (baking chocolate, canned soup for dh, haddock) so Iām happy with it!
What are your plans for the haddock?? I impulse bought some a month ago and I havenāt been inspired to make anything with it yet
My husband doesnāt love seafood so Iāll probably make them one at a time for myself, Iāll probably bread and fry one, maybe make a quick curry or soup for another, and possibly quick tacos? Any way that you might use cod you can use haddock!
I want to know more about these tamales
Me too! Those were a splurge and Iāve never tried them but Iāll let you know here how they are when I do! I also bought some artichoke stuffed pastry thing that looked good. Every couple of weeks I get some random stuff that has nothing to do with meal planning; I think it helps me avoid cookās block (like writerās block but for a cook, lol).
Well thatāll teach me to skim read, I saw another phrase entirely
Bahahaha!
First time taking the bus to do produce shopping here! I havenāt been on a city bus in about 6 years, that was the last time I was in good enough shape to handle it! It wasnāt as bad as I thought. I still needed a lot more strength than in a car, but with husband to carry everything it was ok. Iām glad I could go with him!
Also people apparently do not use city style carts here? So everyone at the produce store stared at us as we loaded our produce into our cart. They looked at us like we were doing something completely perplexing, like putting socks on our hands and walking around backwards, like they couldnāt fathom why we might have a cart. LOL! Then again on the bus! Everyone stared at the cart likeā¦*what is this wheeled beast of burden?!" Haha, wtf!
I forgot to buy eggs! They are kept behind the counter and I didnāt ask while we were checking out. I have enough to make husbandās breakfasts for the week but I may buy a half dozen at a store in walking distance ($) if I want some more through the week. We go through around 3 dozen usually!
The price is a bit high because I bought more than usual since it was our only store today. I am going to have to strategize my shopping much more now that we donāt have a vehicle. I think by altering weekly produce store runs with Aldi runs (maybe Aldi every two weeks?) and very occasional Instacart orders (maybe once a month?) we can get by well without a car. Less convenient but doable! I wonāt be able to go in the colder weather but for now I can enjoy it.
Pretty shop @Pancakes ! I forgot to take a photo again this week but spent $79 at Aldi. It wasnāt nearly so colorful though!
I have gone through the freezer to figure out what itās currently looking like after I was surprised to discover we were down to one cup of stock (had I realized, I wouldnāt have used stock the last few weeks for my rice).
Turns out when I ask the shadowy one to pull something out of the freezer to put on top of roasted sweet potato home fries, we get meat, and there is no consideration of keeping a degree of variety. I need to start using the tomatoes more actively and pulling some of these items for my lunches as well.
