Great work benefits you've had, or heard of?

Ooh I want to work there please

I remembered that old work would give you a week of community service hours.

Well… it’s Google, so you might actually not want to work there

Has on site child care been mentioned? That’s one I’ve heard of for some big companies.

I just remembered that ex-employer had free feminine hygiene products in the women’s restrooms. Convenient, but not a huge thing except one colleague’s friend asked about it EVERY time I saw her “DO YOU STILL HAVE FREE TAMPONS!?” - so obviously it is a bigger deal to some.

We also had lactation rooms - small room with dimmable lights and a nice recliner. In one area, a guy was going in there to nap, I think he was told not to do this and there was some grumbling from some guys. It didn’t last too long, but it was irritating.

FYI - I would be fine with a similar nap room set up for everyone.

It’s funny because as I’m reading through a lot of these, I think “Oh yeah, we have that too!” but I wasn’t really thinking of them as special benefits. Maybe I need to change my perspective and enjoy the last couple months before I quit and start building up a work-from-home freelance business!

My current company has a lactation room on every floor of all the buildings (I’ve never been in them but assume they are fairly nice) and right across the hall is a ‘relaxation space’ with dimmed lights, hot and cold towels, and curtains separating 3-4 recliners. This is in contrast to a previous job where there was a strict ‘no sleeping’ policy on the entire campus. Even taking a 15 min rest in your car before your shift started was grounds for immediate termination. I’m still not sure why they were so strongly opposed to sleep though!

I agree that my last two stretch the definition of “benefits” or even “perks”. They were the only ones I could think of directly targeting women.

Before the lactation rooms, women used the restroom to pump - not the most hygienic feeling environment. And those spaces are loud and echoey- so kind of distracting for those not pumping.

If we’re talking in the US, private space for lactation is not a benefit, but a federal requirement for any employer covered under the Fair Labor Standards Act. It does not have to be permanently dedicated, exclusive space, but it has to be available on demand, and bu law it cannot be a bathroom.

Reading about space - at our office we have prayer rooms available, walking treadmill desks (you must sign up for these an hour at a time), and fancy bathrooms with showers and lockers if you want to ride your bike or go the the gym.

Recently free sparkling water has been added in addition to filtered water - I have only heard about this, still waiting to go in and see it!

Our company has the same rule and I finally found out it was because the company has factories (although most workers are office workers) so the entire company is subject to OSHA safety rules, which includes no sleeping on site.

Your post just reminded me that one of my current benefits is that my org contributes to my retirement - equal to 10% of my base salary - even if I don’t.
