Broke out the ole resist bot after being dormant for too long. Used part of that surj wording. So far have contacted congressional reps, need to do state and local too.
Hello all.
This video was created by a black artist to create both a platform for black art and for a way for folks with limited financial resources to help the BLM cause. There’s a list at the beginning of the video for where funds are split. It’s been playing on my computer on mute since I watched it the first time through, and it will continue to do so for the whole evening.
Let the ads play, she’s generating it through ad revenue and has built in a TON of ads on purpose. Turn off ad blockers.
Retracting tentative decent feels re our local police. They have now pulled some bullshit.
Thank you so much for sharing this. That is worlds away from my own high school experience. I don’t even know how you’d restrict access to my high school, or even most schools in our state, the layout is entirely open.
Thank you all for this thread, I’m following along to keep myself updated on how everything is going and what I can do. @Illatherael I appreciate the words, I will edit them a little for my own representatives.
Minneapolis Public Schools unanimously voted to end their contact with MPD!
There is supposed to be a BLM protest here tomorrow in a city park. I’m vacillating between feeling like I need to be there because this is an overwhelmingly Trump-supporting area and if not me, then who? and feeling that it’s effectively pointless and might be dangerous because it will be a tiny group of people in a place that BLM is very unwelcome. It will also be 98 degrees tomorrow, but that is not a consideration that will stop me.
I have written to federal and state representatives, county commissioners and sherriff. Wondering if there’s a protest near me other than in the big city. Unsure about being part of a larger gathering during a pandemic.
Yeah, unfortunately that’s another issue. I spoke to a woman for two or three minutes at a protest on Saturday (Sunday? I’m losing track) before she told me she had just had COVID. We were both in masks and probably three feet apart, but it still freaked me out.
This is what the protests look like in my city tonight
(Preview is broken you have to click through but it is worth it)
There’s a similar scene in L.A. right now, although arrests are starting, quietly. I’m so proud of these people.
30 Mins after that was taken tear gas started
Jesus we left at the right time. We were on the bridge, but left to find a bathroom about 30 minutes later.
Things peaceful protests have accomplished in the past week:
Formal charges against one of the four officers involved in murdering George Floyd.
Both UofM and MPS (Mpls public schools) have terminated their contracts with MPD. This defunds MPD by millions of dollars without even involving city government.
Minnesota state Department of Human Rights has been ordered to investigate patterns of systemic racism within MPD over the past ten years.
It’s just the beginning of work that needs to be done but it actually feels like a beginning.
In the scale of all police brutality, this is a small thing that should have already been done…but it is a change.
It’s like the statues coming down. On the one hand, wild cheers, on the other…why is it only happening now?
During/ after Ferguson a bunch of monuments and confederate flags came down, but I think momentum on that action petered out.
To see a true badass, look up Bree Newsome Confederate Flag. She is a brilliant hero.
There was a … not a petition, actually, it was some sort of public-comments-open site, circulating yesterday where, before midnight, you had to write in to get Chicago police out of the schools. I sent in my comments just under the wire. I hope that goes through.
Just watched local presser
Chauvin’s charge upgraded to 2nd degree murder, 2nd degree manslaughter
All 4 officers have now been charged (aiding & abetting 2nd degree murder; 2nd degree manslaughter)
This came up in my news alert also. Some progress. Need the hate crime to be invoked too.
