I’m a bit miffed because they get a bit more shade than I was expecting, and it’s “winter”, and the ones that are getting the most shade are looking noticeably more vigorous than the ones that don’t get so much tree shade :woman_shrugging:. Perhaps a happy error.

The latest adventures in quality over quantity:

Got a decent harvest of greens, at least. This took the combined efforts of many plants. Spinach, chard, butter (?) lettuce, and romaine.

Charles Cabbage is growing up nicely despite a lot of baby leaf munching:

Oooh mushrooms look complicated.

I have aphids on my blueberries. Ugh. Sprayed with white oil to see if that helps.

This looks like swiss chard to me, rhubarb leave are not glossy and also not as crinkly, and also I think the leaf part sits at the top of the stalk differently.

BUT I AM NOT AN EXPERT.

Did you grow this in your own yard?

You could taste the stalks. Rhubarb stalks are very tart, swiss chard is fairly bland.

Oh, also, I think rhubarb stalks are kind of round in cross section? Chard are not round in cross section, more kind of like a U? (Maybe someone else can confirm?)

Definitely not rhubarb IMO

Veins don’t continue into leaf that way

I agree something in chard/beet family, and agree that a nibble of the stalk will tell you for sure

ETA I wandered out for not great photos because I thought it stopped raining but it’s just raining and sunny at the same time lol

Young rhubarb leaves (these are about two weeks old and already much bigger than most chard at harvest-age)

That last photo is great, that’s what I thought but wasn’t sure about how the leaf was at the top of the stem (I don’t have any of my own). :slight_smile:

It’s like a giant hat plopped on top of a tasty stalk, just waiting to be turned into a giant skirt when I cut and use it for mulch haha

At least in my garden, rhubarb is the fanciest of fancy dress hat plumage, that faints in the heat but wants the spotlight of the sun. A glorious lady, she is!

@CalBal @krmit @katscratch - thank you! I got this from a community garden. I assumed it was chard, but someone else thought it was rhubarb. Google photos was confusing enough to confirm with the experts here.

My crowder peas are climbing the corn stalks just like I planned.

Meanwhile operation stake the tomatoes higher and higher continues. We now have too many baby Romas to count.

And it got cool for several days and all my squash plants decided that meant it was time to make all the male flowers and no girls again. Mostly this is frustrating because at least the straightneck squash had it figured out for awhile. Not anymore.

First tulip of the season.

Also went through the majority of the strawberry pots and got rid of dead leaves and stalks and removed the flowering stems (too cold for fruit to ripen), the odd slug and snail, they’re now ready for a top up of worm castings and some mulch.
