It's the winter solstice but what does that mean for our seasons?
For most of us, winter started on June 1 but to Indigenous Australians and people in other parts of the world, today's solstice means something different. So who's right?
@MonkeyJenga be careful with Borage Yeltsin if you donāt want it everywhere pull up the seedlings after it goes to seed, or you will have a borage forest. (Speaking from experience.)
@diapasoun I am surprised you donāt have 2nd gen borage growing. I get borage all summer long now, and if I donāt pull them out before they become enormous they are difficult to deal with because the hairs are very irritating especially on old, big stalks and leaves. In the spring especially I get TONS of seedlings (presumably from the previous yearsā seed) but I also get new seedlings growing as I pull older, bigger ones out. (Well, I did in Utah anyway. Borage does well in poor conditions, so it well watered conditions (ie my garden), and with some fertilizer, it goes gangbusters.)
Although I am thinking the first year I had a borage it was very modest. It was only starting in year 2 that I started having a borage forest.

Oh yes, our little yeltsins were taken from a friendās garden, since she has waaay too many. I want them to spread a bit, but Iāll try to keep them out of the nearby corm s and greens.
Oh. It was definitely a borage forest. Some of the stalks were about two inches in diameter. I actually just pulled it all out this morning ā I have leather work gloves and was very grateful to have those. I waited until the flowers were mostly gone (the bees loooove it) and am now very glad that itās out.
Today I learned to never ever give up on mint that looks dead after winter. It took until today, but it is finally coming back. (Definitely mint and not a weed, I smelled it)
My baby bell pepper has succumbed to the constant rain and gloomā¦ Bye bye, rotting bell pepper. Itās almost like the Pacific Northwest isnāt the best place to grow hot climate vegetables???
These pictures are terrible, but does anyone recognize these peas/beans? They were in a school garden planter box next to snap peas, so Iām guessing theyāre edible. I donāt want to risk it, though.
Bob (Best of beanies) has outgrown our trellis. This was three days ago. Other beans have crested the top since then. Time to add a second story.
The mystery bean might be fava beans? Not 100%, but I know fava bean pods come directly from the main stem like that.
RIP peppers
One of my zucchini has started flowering and (maybe) setting fruit! Iāve had poor luck with zucchs the last couple years and I may be about to regret the (4) plants I planted this yearā¦
My garlic is aaaaalmost ready to harvest. It just needs to stop freaking raining for a bit. Iāve been overwhelmed with a flood of lettuce this week and there are still 5 more mature heads in the garden, just slug eaten and almost bolting enough to feel bad about gifting to neighbors. Itās been a great time to experiment with salad dressings.
And Iām so excited, Iāve finally successfully grown a cabbage! Itās almost ready to harvest
Itās beautiful
I think youāre right about the fava beans! Your cabbage is impressive. All of the outer leaves on mine have been munched to nothingness.
Donāt wait tooo long to harvest your cabbage or the head will split.
That cabbage looks beautiful.
I have flowers on my blueberry! Since that means Iāve successfully kept one alive in a pot for a year, Iām off to buy more blueberry bushes today, and more pots tomorrow (different shops)
ok, the batch of seeds I tried direct sowing havenāt done anything, so Iām going to try to germinate some more spinach & greens mix using paper towels.
the strawberries are giving me tiny 1cm fruit, so weāll see if any of it makes it to ripening.
Those ferns are beautiful.
We have a tomato baby! For some reason I assumed they would be easy to spot, because red against green leaves eh? Except oh right, they donāt start out red ā¦
Want to play name the plant?
Cukes are starting to flower! I need to build it a little trellis too.
Turns out itās tatsoi!
I had never heard of meteorological vs astronomical seasons before, this was an excellent article that helped me understand why I get confused talking to people from other countries! For most of us, winter started on June 1 but to Indigenous Australians and people in other parts of the world, today's solstice means something different. So who's right?
