Oh shit I’m gonna start tossing some coffee grounds under our lemon tree. WHY HAVE I NOT THOUGHT OF THIS BEFORE.

I ended up going local for the strawberries so I could plant them over the weekend. Behold!

More details in my journal, but here are today’s garden pics:

Also, you can like, eat dandelions right? Because I have so many dandelions. Turns out about 6 inches of mulch will smother grass on its own but dandelions don’t give no fudges.

Yep. New greens in salad, older greens in a wilted salad or cooked in a pot, flowers battered and fried, the little cluster of not-yet-blooms just under the surface as a boiled vegetable, roots dried and ground as a coffee/tea. The only part that’s really not edible is the flower stems. Which of course is the part I chewed on a a child…

You can also feed them to chickens or rabbits and then eat them  Dandelions are like crack for rabbits and chickens like them quite a bit too.

I grew a corn vagina.

All of my paper towel-germinated corn have sprouted, and I’m working on my next set of labia seeds.

I experimented with seeds saved from a grocery store Roma tomato - germinated them in a paper towel and planted in pots. 4 have sprouted! Plus, another cabbage and two onion tops sprouted. Even if the onions themselves don’t regrow, it will be fun to try the onion greens.

The solanums seem to be perking up in bigger pots. Really wish they didn’t have to be back inside, watering is going to be a PITA. But pretty cold for a while yet. image image image

I put coffee grounds into my compost bin. I like to consider myself a man of science, and find the gardening community riddled with folklore and myth - and coffee grounds are appartently able to do magical things.

This guy’s website is most excellent:

Several gardening questions:

A neighbor gave me a strawberry plant last year and said it should fruit this year. I planted it but now it’s basically gone after the winter. She told me to plant it and leave it so I did, but…will it come back?

Our local farm place is selling something called Italian boxwood Basil, they said it tastes the same as basil but grows more bush-like and isn’t leggy and is good for containers. We use a lot of basil so I’d be super interested in that if it’s actually any good. Anyone grown it before?

I think outside of basil, my potential strawberry plant, and the parsley I just potted outside I’m just going to get more painted roses since they grew well in my containers last year. Unless anyone has any tips? I have two 9” wide by 72” long planters and two 10” pots (one has the parsley now). Last year’s tomatoes were too small and few for even salads, so I don’t know that growing more than herbs and pretties is going to work on my tiny porch.

I’d love to grow more food stuff/“practice” growing things that I’d like to grow when I have an actual garden but I only have a tiny space on my porch

Not familiar with that basil variety. The strawberry should have already broken dormancy and potentially even been blooming by now in my climate, so even earlier where you are.

How deep are the planters?

I wonder whether they’ve just tacked a new name onto the Spicy Globe Basil or Greek Basil.

Oops it’s also not Italian, here’s their post

I’ve grown this! It was okay; mine was indeed leggy and not exactly the taste of basil I am used to and prefer.

It’s been really cold and rainy here recently with the exception of a day or two here and there that were warm. Yesterday was really nice so hoping that continues but not sure what that means for the plants.

There’s definitely nothing coming up in the planter so I’ll probably just add in more potting mix and turn the soil over.

The planter is maybe 7” deep? I never measured depth

The depth limits your options quite a bit. Baby greens, bush beans, maybe some other small veggies would be options to consider.

Round carrots would work too, aka Parisian carrots.

Let’s talk Kangaroo Paws. Aren’t they awesome? I just bought a bright pink one for Mrs PDM’s mothers day (I know, she isn’t my mother but Baby PDM did not have anything planned). I love it. Totally not bought for me…

Oh, Australian mother’s day is May 10th this year - don’t freak out US people.

I’m like, 80% sure that’s our mother’s day too this year?

I stand corrected - the UK has it earlier than we do.
