P.S., if you have mulched your yard, you will probably at some point get butt splinters. Sincerely, someone who currently has butt splinters.

Iā€™ve been sniggering this entire time. Hard ball. Loose root. Teehee

Is loose root something thatā€™s funny in Australian that I donā€™t understand?

Beyond ā€œrootā€ meaning sex?

Iā€™ve heard ā€œruttingā€ for sex but not ā€œrootā€ for sex.

I think itā€™s just British/Australian/NZ slang for having sex.

Now put in your best Australian accent and say ā€œFancy a root?ā€

Well the weekend is drawing to a close here. We just spent a lovely autumnal afternoon in the garden.

  • repotted, fertilised and mulched the blueberry, chilli and dwarf lemon.
  • applied fish emulsion to everything
  • caterpillar hunted (and decided I needed to invest in a spray (probably neem oil based)
  • found a worm

Is tomorrow not a public holiday in QLD?

Nah, we donā€™t get an ANZAC day holiday this year.

We donā€™t get one for Anzac Day here either in VIC.

Went to #thebiggreenshed today. Had a list of items Iā€™d been adding to over the last fortnight. Managed to get everything I wanted except for some Gorilla Tape, had to go to a #thebigaquashed for that.

Potting mix, Cow manure, Blood n bone, pot hangers, another small long grey pot, a pot to match the Gerbera for my wife as an early Motherā€™s Day present from me.

I need to remind my household that Motherā€™s Day is coming so that they can obtain plants. Excellent reminder.

Been following along here while not so patiently waiting for my plant hangers to come. I need to research what plants to grow on my porch. I got some basil in my grocery delivery but it looks pretty pathetic, I donā€™t know if it will survive. I have the sprouting garlic but that will probably go in my small pots since itā€™s not likely to actually grow.

I think Iā€™ll get mint because I use it in summer a lot. So mint and basil but thatā€™s all Iā€™ve got so far. I grew 2 tomato plants from starts I bought last year but they only grew small fruit and didnā€™t really feel worth it. Wondering if I just want to get more painted roses and just do pretty things since the pots will be hanging and more visible this year.

I also have Brussels sprouts seeds but theyā€™re weird. I planted them in the fall when the seed place told me to and first something ate them, then I covered them with tulle netting and they grew again but so slowly that I stopped caring for them because I thought they were dead. So idk about those, plus idk when the right time to plant them is. I might have missed it.

Any sage advice for a tiny porch garden that gets some full sun for most of the afternoon?

If youā€™re not otherwise going to use those brussels sprouts seeds, you could plant them out and eat them as micro greens early on.

Guess what idiot sandwich planted their asparagus upside down and now canā€™t find one of them?

I want to grow them and I was hoping to get a real harvest of them since we eat tons of Brussels sprouts but I couldnā€™t get them to grow enough for even micro greens. Is it an ok time to plant them again? Iā€™d be happy to try again and this time Iā€™ll keep them covered from the beginning

I donā€™t know where you are, but where I am itā€™s far too late as itā€™s about to get hot. Can you do a fall crop in your area?

Iā€™m near DC, itā€™s supposed to get hot soon but itā€™s been cool recently. I planted in the fall last time so Iā€™ll give it a shot again this year
