Not if it’s rabbit crap
Our chicken for that matter. Hard to get a big load of either (easier with rabbit).
My cabbage babies are leggy and falling over, is there any hope? They’re in small pots, not the ground yet. I have more seeds, so I can try again. How do I cabbage?
You can try putting them in bigger pots, burying them higher up on their stems (I think this works with cabbage), and then putting them either closer to their light source or near a better light source. Taking them outside for a little bit of time each day if it’s warm enough may help them grow to be less leggy.
My brassicas often have a bend in the stem because the tops get too heavy before the stem is strong enough. If it’s just that (and not super duper leggy) you can pot up and they will continue to grow (just with the bend in the stem). You probably can also direct sow this time of the year. Make sure they get plenty of strong light to reduce legginess. Harden off though, if they are not already.
Inside or outside? Pic would also help. A certain amount of leggy/wobbly stem is normal for brassicas. When you put them in the ground, bury the stem so that first true leaves are just barely above the soil.
Thanks @Greyweld, @CalBal, and @druidessie! Pot up means move to a bigger pot? I am wary of sowing directly in the ground, since we have limited space. They have been put outside during the day, so they should be hardened. In a shed at night.
The cabbages in question.
That is too leggy to survive IMO. They are not getting anywhere near enough light
Agree, start over.
If using grow lights, unless they are very hot, they need to be very close. With florescents, that means like 2" from the tops of plants.
Good news everyone! Some of my direct seeds have finally started to come up! I can see a row forming – I think it’s the arugula but it could be one of the lettuces.
My rhubarb has also re-emerged, my seeded spinach is starting to grow, and my volunteer spinach is thriving!
I may not have totally screwed up! Yay!
I have had things like that before that didn’t live I’m surprised they did that while outside though. Weird. Is this only recenty that they started going out or did you put them out at planting?
Ugggh. Dammit. We don’t have grow lights. Almost everything else has done okay without that. Can I put new seeds in similar pots and just leave the pots outside all day? Do they need to start indoors and harden off gradually? I guess they don’t need to start indoors if they can be direct sowed. So I need to make sure I put the little pots in full sun?
They’ve been going outside for most of the day for a couple of weeks, but not always in a super sunny spot. The yard is pretty shady.
Yay @Greyweld!
For hardy plants, which should include cabbage, you can probably plant them and pots and leave them out all day, only bringing them in if it’s gonna get really shitty. From what I understand, hardening is only required if they start out in a less harsh environment like indoors.
You might want to start new seeds indoors in the pots (because it is warmer) but then immediately when you see them start poking up out of the soil move them outside permanently (unless it is going to be really cold overnight or like hail is forecast or something) because they will germinate faster in warmer conditions. You only need to harden off things that are started inside and grow there for a while because they are delicate little babies. Just make sure the pots don’t dry out, baby seedlings are sensitive to drying out. Give as much sun as possible once they germinate.
Ugh I kicked over one of my pots when moving things back inside and now my lettuce pot will probably still grow lettuce but in a haphazard disorganized fashion.
Thanks everyone! I’ll try again with a few new seeds.
I have never grown things before, and now I’m growing ALL THE THINGS. So many variables.
I feel you! It’s hard not to go from “I can keep easy plants alive” to “must… grow… EVERYTHING…” to “I have a farm now.”
Speaking from my own experience resist the urge to do too much too fast. Many of my previous gardening seasons ended in me burnt out by early September
Hahaha, not even easy plants, I have killed lucky bamboo before! Its only advantage is being impossible to kill.
But… I have nothing else to do all day! This is good for mental stimulation, physical activity, and eventually free food/avoiding stores. Although I’m already sick of slug-hunting.
Fair point! I’ve got kids and homeschool so I have to be careful I don’t bite off too much when I’m more free during summer that things don’t crash and burn when school starts.
