Here is a late summer report on seeded annuals with maybe one thing a resounding success, and the other others problematic to varying degrees.

“Snow on the mountain” Euphobia: doing pretty well, although really only four or five plants came up, but this is pretty in late summer so good for the garden due to its late bloom.

Cosmos, two kinds: a complete disaster. Apparently these are the non-blooming kind of cosmos ha ha. A few stragglers came up, stood there for a long time with NO flowers and now they’re browning and dying.

Zinnias: not good. I ordered fancy kinds and what came up were tall stringy Zinnias exactly like the ones DH grows from his seed of many years old.

Larkspur: had 2 decent stands of it out of 5 areas planted. These were new seeds and I will say they included many colors that I did not have in my old seeds.

Poppies: did fairly well considering. I know they will seed themselves well next year.

Did not see at all: Hollyhocks, Mexican sun flowers.

Morning glory: ugh. Grew fast and tall. Still no flowers. Google says they take 4 months to flower and that is too long!

The annuals I bought as bedding class for doing very well.

i have several cosmos that didnt flower, too, and so does my friend! i wonder what that is about.

i’m sorry you didn’t get more of the flowers you wanted. it has been a weird weather year!

I rarely cut flowers, but I did yesterday and brought this to my friend for her birthday.

The yellow are a fun rudbeckia with tubular petals. Assorted zinnias and one red dahlia.

wow what a beaut!!

i spy some platinum blonde dahlias i think? that’s been one of my faves this year, though i’ve only gotten one stem so far.

why oh why did i plant all my fancy dahlia bulbs in shitty weedy soil :sob::laughing:

Those are from Petite Floret seed! It’s the second year for it because I didn’t kill the tuber over the winter. Yay me! I think it is more of a pale creamy yellow than the Platinum Blonde, I really love it. I also have a bunch of daylilies the same color.

Even if you don’t get good blooms this year, the tubers should be ok in not great soil right? So you can save them, improve the soil and try again next year?

yes that’s what i’m hoping! i’m working on the soil still and i know dahlias like it best in september so i’m holding on to hope for some blooms before the season is done at least

I have had a few varieties bloom, but most of my dahlias are really just starting to get buds. They are like 4’ tall or more though.
