Wow!!!
Beautyberry, though it’ll get up to a couple of feet in good soil.
Wood phlox would probably be fine with just morning sun. It’s blooming now though, so maybe next year.
This isn’t exactly an annual, but you could do bulbs, like tulips and daffodils. For me they’ve been doing fine in partial shade and I have done nothing since planting them. Hyacinths are a nice one; they are very fragrant and colorful. I bought some a couple years ago as full flowering plants at the nursery, put them in the ground, and they’ve come back since.
If you buy/order bulbs now, you can put them in the ground in the fall and will get blooms a year from now.
Realizing I’m in a very different zone from you, so this may be taken with a grain of salt!
impatiens would like this set up. they are pretty low to the ground, though.
begonias and coleus would like it too. coleus is mostly foliage but comes in such beautiful interesting colors.
Some of my winter sown jugs have the tiniest sprouts in them!
me too! the snapdragons and the sweet peas!
what’s coming up for you?
I didn’t take the time to check what they all were, but definitely some Yarrow. It’s supposed to snow tonight but I will check whenever I can see labels.
Most of my garden is dead after I completely neglected it through the end of summer… but the dragonfruit flowered!
Hoping to grow a sunflower in my aerogarden/hydro set up.
I just checked on my winter sown containers and I am disappointed but maybe it’s too early and I’m getting ahead of myself in my 6a zone. It is my first time doing this so I am not sure what should be happening, but I thought I would have more than this by now. The small pots have a bit of germination, but everything is tiny. The milk jugs have zero germination. These are mostly Snapdragons and Scabiosa. These were all planted 8 weeks ago. They have been in snow, rain and sunshine, and we have had a few warm days. I opened one and the soil is damp but not wet. I planted a couple more milk jugs and a bunch of small pots 4 weeks ago with just Yarrow, and it is all germinating but tiny.
What should this stuff look like? I am planting seeds this weekend that will be on heat mats and under lights, so I guess I will plant all of these same things again to make sure I get some. I was excited for this method because I heard that certain plants preferred it.
my winter sown stuff is tiny, too. give it some more time! last year i direct sowed a bunch of stuff on march 1 and some of it didn’t start coming up until may.
remember it’s all an experiment and you will learn a lot by just observing what happens.
Be patient? Learn stuff? Bah. My assumption was that they would be correct planting size by mid-end of May but they would really have to take off for that to be the case. I do think I’m going to duplicate plant this weekend because I will be very sad if I don’t get these particular flowers.
end of may is 8 weeks away they have time to grow yet.
no harm in starting them again though — more flowers is a good thing!
I agree with Madge that it’s too early! My wintersown stuff is only about 5% germinated yet (zone 5b) and everything germinated is super tiny. I do mostly perennials, which do tend to stay small and are unlikely to bloom the whole first year, but annuals I plant will shoot up very quickly in April/May.
Bulbs around my neighborhood are starting to pop! I don’t know if I’ve ever noticed the hyacinths before - they’re so perfect they don’t look real
There were a ton of grape hyacinths too.
There’s a bunch of hyacinths in my neighborhood too. They’re so delightfully springy.
We’re in peak daffodil season here, but the tulips are starting. Here’s a tiny one:
Meanwhile, indoors, I’m watching my orchid open:
omg the colors on that orchid!
