Decluttering discussion thread: share your wins, ask for advice, inspire each other!

I was able to gift my beloved nursing chair to a neighbor friend  very sad to see it go, but also very happy to not have a giant semi disassembled chair blocking half the office. Also, she’s another taller gal and so I’m very happy to pass on a chair that was tall enough for me to lean my head back on! Her rocking chair broke after her second and they’re pregnant with their third. Happy to have it go to someone I know and like and nearby and know it’ll be treated well. Plus she passes hand me downs on to a big network of family, so I’m glad to have the chair enter a stream of use that won’t end in the dump in 6 months!

Also finally swallowed my bad timing, and the FOUR brand new sleeves of pull ups I had bought immediately before my youngest decided she was Done with nighttime diapers is going to another neighbor.

Next up: giant project to rearrange my oldest’s room and try to make it more functional for all her LEGO and art pursuits.

Anyone have any experience with the ikea captains bed? SlÀkt?

Returns were made to 3 different stores today, freeing up the corner chair that had been taken over.

I do not, but that looks like a great bed. Love a storage bed!

Organising the baby toys out of the other toy boxes today so we just have the best ones to share with my niece when she visits.

So far i have made a mess of the floor and also removed some crappy bits before the kids could see them.

I tackled both utensil drawers and ended up removing 1 set of plastic measuring spoons, I set of salad spoon and paddle, a ladle, a bunch of toothpicks, twist ties and elastics that have collected.

I have a baby silver spoon and fork engraved set that I was going to dispose of and bff told me to keep them and use them at my annual Christi party so they have been saved for now.

I also set aside my mother’s eye glasses for donation.

I have a bee in my bonnet with decluttering lately. Nothing will be as satisfying as the big basement project of my parents but I am trying to do a drawer here, a shelf there. It seems like the daily practice is starting to make a difference.

I got rid of a big box of baby toys we will no longer use and that feels great!

Why do the baby toys take up so much space!! I was so glad to give them to my sister and mom

Pro tip I figured out earlier cleaning behind a big heavy piece of furniture in my kid’s room - a random thing fell behind it and I couldn’t reach it with my hand but I could with tongs from the kitchen! And then I put a cardboard “skate park” he made a couple summers ago at camp on top of the corner table and his Beyblades arena on top of that - they both space hogs so they’re welcome to be in what usually becomes a black hole for little trinkets, plus they’re big enough that they overhang all the way to the wall, hopefully stopping any other little things from falling back there.

I spent way too long on that corner for it to look 85% the same when I was done but I can’t leave a totally cleared surface in there. It wouldn’t survive a single day.

Yesterday, sorted through the PROLIFIC art from kinder. I’d already done a first round cull on most of it as it came in, so sadly there were virtually no easy things like coloring sheets. I had SIX full paper grocery bags and a giant art portfolio to go through. Kept probably less than 1/10th in a big memory bin we’ll store. That was a huge undertaking. Followed it up by also cleaning and decluttering her downstairs art zone and her bedroom desk. Both kids were at summer preschool together and Husband helped me blitz through the tasks. :clap:t2: all those areas feel so; so much better now. (And of course very inviting again, so she already went and Made Things and messed them up again :joy: but with how much we got rid of, it won’t go to hell again all at once)

contractor asked about old paint colour finishes (I had told him the colours, but didn’t know if it was satin or eggshell or
), and I took him to the basement to see what the cans had, and he was like “and we can take these away for you”.

Which would be lovely, because we missed environment day where we would have needed to put them into our wagon and roll them to the event and find the hazardous waste disposal line and perhaps be stuck behind a bunch of cars

Used the time yesterday both kids were at summer preK to deal with the garage a fair bit! Couples boxes to goodwill, stuff rearranged, etc. progress! Level 2 charger gets installed next week.

Dump day.

Also, farm neighbor brought eggs and I remembered to give her the egg cartons I set aside for her.

Teacher neighbor got excess planner stickers and scrapbooking paper. Whatever she doesn’t use goes into the teacher’s lounge I think
or given to her daughter, also a teacher. So, 3 wads o’ stuff that were hanging around to go away are GONE!

Pawned off a picture, a pen holder, and 2 jackets to a friend/former work colleague. She is thrilled and so am I.

agreement in principle to post the old (one leg is bent) tripod lamp for free to see if anyone wants it, thus removing it from the basement
