Got my mom to take my kids at HER HOUSE for a couple hours while husband and I both worked on all the toy storage areas. A couple giant boxes are going to a speech therapist for use at her clinic, we filled up our trash bin, I dropped a balance beam off at a neighbors, several boxes and a large Costco tote to goodwill, and a Costco tote partially full for my brother and his wife who eventually in theory plan to have kids.
(Redacted one had a box with address)
Last picture is an “after” of a cupboard that was very full before we started. Huge win. Tons of space in the bins in the kids’ closets now, too.
the broken toaster oven has been put to the front door so it will go out for garbage pickup tomorrow, and the knife block I got from freecycle a decade ago has been dropped off at the thrift shop.
the full garbage bag of textile recycling has been dropped off at the shop which claims they do textile recycling.
I need to do something about the fancy shoes. And find the envelopes so I can send out socks to those who said they’re interested.
Oh yes, another part that was a win. Whenever the kids get shitty toys from the Dentist, or random goodie bag loot, after the initial day or two when the novelty wears off, I put it all in this giant IKEA jar. I was able to take a ton of the stuff out and pass it on to the speech therapist to use in their birthday gift bin for their patients.
envelopes were found. one has been entrusted to the postal system. the others are denied until I go to a website and fill out forms because freedom or something
Two packages are out. Each envelope needs two qr codes from separate sites with different forms, so I want to make sure I’m not getting them mixed up.
People receiving socks should probably wash them in cold separately the first time, as several of the pairs are using small dyer yarns, and those tend to bleed at first.
electrician asked if he could take the cardboard boxes the new lights came in. seems he’s moving shortly. we said yes. then I asked if he wanted some plastic tubs, because we were just going to list them online.
So he is going to pick up 8 on the weekend when he doesn’t have his hockey gear in his car. so much easier than messaging back and forth on some platform
I finally went through all of the kids costumes. He agreed to get rid of two too small things. I bagged up the accessories and the non-helmet headwear, we’ll see how long it stays like this. On the bright side, he doesn’t usually just dump things all over the floor so the less popular things being on the bottom might stay undisturbed for a while.
My mom complained that we didn’t give her enough gift ideas for the wiggler. I said he has too much stuff already. She suggested a cull. I would love to cull. Maybe she will come and take him out of the house so D and I can go through his stuff and donate or throw out stuff he doesn’t play with (D will know better than I do).
I’m frustrated that some stuff is probably going to get thrown out because the pieces were not kept track of and they’re probably somewhere in my house but not with the rest of the toy. Or do you think it would be worth listing things on Buy Nothing like that? Like, large shape puzzle for toddlers, 2 shapes missing?
I’d really like to get his buy-in with giving stuff away but haven’t had success so far. Some things I know he won’t miss so I don’t mind as much, but for example, he doesn’t play with Duplos but if I make him put something away in the bin they used to be in, he might notice. Any suggestions on getting a 7-year-old on board with decluttering?
