Covid-19 discussion

Hi all. I don’t really have much to add except empathy. Definitely trying times. I’ve been over at MMM and feeling very isolated with most of the regulars gone.

We’ve just been given a 30 day stay at home. I think it’s good because we don’t have many cases in the local area and they want to keep it that way so resources can be diverted towards the areas that need it. Family is stocked up. Got some extra dog food today. We’ve already emptied our supplies of masks to the local first responders and they have an inventory of our gloves. We can use a fume hood and the gloves are for keeping our hands from getting sticky…none of that necessary.

Hubby and I have a business that is considered essential but it’s just the two of us. And we’ve been asked to provide quality testing for some of the distillers who are starting to produce hand sanitizer. So, we’re going to remain open but we should still be isolated since it’s just us. We’ve basically been out of in person gatherings for more than 2 weeks already.

I just used the Target drive up service – the parking lot wasn’t too full in general, and I was the only person in the drive up area during the 10 minutes or so it took for them to bring my order out. Seattle is on the first day of the official “stay home, stay safe” directive and there wasn’t much traffic, etc. I would use the early hours and be diligent about staying a good distance from people.

I would also keep your appointment. If the wave has not hit your area yet it will in a few weeks and they will likely cancel all non-emergency medical appointments. I had a sleep dr. follow up scheduled on March 9 at our big public hospital and I’m glad I went when I did. I wore a mask (DH had brought some home with him from China) and gloves, kept my hood up to cover my hair, disinfected my purse/credit cards/car keys/car handles and dash/shoes with a disinfecting wipe once home, put all my clothes and my purse immediately in the wash, showered and changed to fresh clothes.

The Targets within 15 miles of me don’t do drive-up, and they won’t include toilet paper for in-store pickup or shipped orders. Same with the grocery stores…Whole Foods was the only one I could find and they were out of toilet paper when filling my order so they very helpfully suggested I might like kleenex instead. :grimacing:

I’m in LA so the wave is here and increasing but we’re not nearly as bad as Seattle/Santa Clara/NYC and in my specific city we’ve only had a few cases. BUT, I’m pretty sure we’re in the rapid increase phase which means that it’s spreading NOW. My biggest worry is that someone who works at the Dr office is already infected and just not showing. I think they have good measures in place to keep patients safe but what if the phlebotomist already caught it?! The office is in a hospital annex building and they do lab services in the OB/GYN office so all of these things limit exposure but I just don’t know what patients were there before me.

Sorry everyone, I don’t usually spew this much anxiety but it’s hitting hard today.

Sunflower, your anxiety is perfectly reasonable, and we’re here to listen and care.

Mongoose - really glad to see you here!

Currently explaining how serious this is to my siblings. Sister1 gets it. Younger siblings are following gov’t guidelines, so, about 2 weeks behind what we’re implementing and understanding.

I can’t get any of my shopping online. We have to either have someone else do it for us (hello sister1!), or send Ponder out. Fuck.

Liked this. Simple and good.

Thank you. I’m going to put this on our wall so we look after ourselves.

On a chat with friends who all have spouses and kids, they were talking about the effects of “extreme togetherness”. I quickly realized that even though I’m a bit lonely, if I had a choice between my current life (complete physical isolation from other people for the last 2 weeks) and theirs right now, I’d pick mine every time.

Hi mongoose! I like seeing you here, please let me know if we can support you in anyway (I’m the Head Cat in Charge, but there’s a few other mods around, and everyone is very nice here.)

God I want to make a printable of that.

I might do that, with my copious free time.

I’ve decided not to go to Target tomorrow. We will drive to my friends house and pick up 6 roles on Friday. This will hopefully last another week and then we can decide what to do after that. (Don’t judge, I’m trying to conserve but am going through toilet paper faster than average for various TMI issues)

TBD on the Dr appointment but I’m leaning towards going.

Stay Home Stay Safe Day 1:

I let myself be lazy today. I’m going to have to figure out how to spread out my few projects so that I have something constructive to do each day. I am not working from home, so it’s just a lot of hours to fill that I would normally be working. I did tell my sister to expect a daily phone call, mostly joking, but maybe not. We did talk for an hour today lol.

I want to do some deeper cleaning and I have some painting to do, but my house is small and already pretty well-organized, so I just don’t have a lot to do. Probably shouldn’t complain about not having enough to do… I’m pretty good at laying on the couch with a book and a cat, but I can’t do that all day for three weeks or more. It’s supposed to be nice tomorrow, so I think I will clean up branches in the yard and clean the garage.

An Uber driver in Lancaster, CA contracted COVID-19, and his 17-year-old daughter just became the first child to die of the virus in LA County. This hits very close to home.

Oh my goodness. That’s incredibly tragic. :sob:

Hi Sunflower, I understand some of your anxiety right now. I attended a midwife appt at my gp yesterday and she told me that they have a system in place that I can wait in my car until she’s ready to see me and then she will ring me and let me know which office to go into so that it minimises waiting around with the other patients. Is there any way you can do that if you do attend the appt?

Just got this email from an email list I’m on. So goddamn surreal.

We are still holding local elections on Saturday with compulsory voting… wtf.

My postal voting paper hasn’t turned up yet. I guess we risk a fine and shit local council representatives if we don’t get our ballot in the next couple of days?

(I posted this in the wrong topic before by mistake, doh)

I’d say you’re getting shit representation how ever you vote and the risk of a fine is low and I’d argue easily defended. “High risk due to underlying health issue”.

Stuff ‘em.

You might want to reach out to vet clinics or nursing homes. They might be able to take things that larger orgs like hospitals won’t.
