Covid-19 discussion

Mine was at 4 months. Didn’t schedule it though. Just asked about it while in line to pick up normal prescriptions. Maybe in person is better than a computer algorithm that hasn’t been updated yet?

it sounds like Washington is lifting the requirement for outside close/large gatherings, but I haven’t heard anything further yet.

Effective Monday local schools no longer require masks for adults “due to the significant drop in COVID cases in our schools”. (They stopped requiring masks a few weeks before the 5-12 shots were available because state legislation went through allowing parents to sue the schools for requiring masks on kids.)

I can kind of see it both ways if I were a fully vaccinated teacher - I’m sure it’s a pain to teach with a mask when you want the kids to hear your clearly, but also kids are gross and I’ve always considered schools to just be petri dishes for colds and the flu every year anyway so a mask sounds like a great idea.

Blue is students, red is staff. This is for the whole county.

The two highest spikes -
Week of August 22 had 224 student cases, 23 staff.
Week of January 9th had 942 students and 189 staff, lolololololhelp.
I’d like to look at local hospitalization rates for those same times, but should get back to work.

What the hell? They couldn’t have decided that a few days ago? I’m sorry.

You know, I’ve stayed pretty calm through the ups and downs of this whole process. Because science is messy, and public health is messy, and weird things are to be expected. But this one has just felt like a gut punch. I can’t wrap my brain around what process led to the request for approval and then backpedal of that decision on such a short timeframe. It’s just super bizarre and so out of left field. This is definitely hitting me worse than the previous changes have. Which is funny, because at this point Latte has had Covid and should have some innate immunity for a while. But I guess I was just banking on her having the vaccination in place and hybrid immunity by the time that wore off.

I think I’ll just mentally pivot to team pinning my hopes on Moderna (April?). They did me a solid on my first rounds, maybe I’ll just lean into the Moderna love and become brand loyal :joy:

OK so this is making it sound more like the decision was on the side of the FDA, which would at least make more sense. Although it still makes me wonder where Pfizer got their initial confidence to apply when they weren’t sure about their data initially when they decided to expand the study.

I thought that Pfizer had been saying all along that they wanted to wait but then got pressure from the FDA to submit anyway, which might explain it… maybe they thought Pfizer was being overly cautious but then had a chance to look at the full data set and said “oh yeah, you were right”?

Still, the whiplash on this one is hard…

At least that’s an explanation that makes sense even if it sucks.

Fool me once…

In December, I was so sad. Heartbroken even. Now I’m furious. This is bullshit.

Ugh. My first thought was, why not get people started with two doses for kids, and add a third later if needed? Or tell people it will be three, and then it’s good news if only two are needed?

Reading the article - it sounds to me like the dose is too low, especially if that dose is working in younger (i.e. smaller) children. Do they have any trials going with a larger dose? Or are they going to wait until three isn’t enough and start over?

Ugh. I think these things require a number of positive cases, and positive cases are more likely during an outbreak. It’s smaller if data are taking during a lull. Which I think is going to drag this out even longer.

This sucks so much.

Where are other companies with their trials for this age group?

ETA I see @Bracken_Joy posted Moderna may be ready by April, here’s hoping that’s the case.

I think Moderna in April would only be 2-5 though since they split out 6mo-2 into a separate study.

I hope something is out for young children soon.

I’m pretty sure they don’t need positive cases but instead go by how many antibodies the test kids produce, and compare them to antibodies that were protective in the rest* adults. Anyway, this is complete shit and I’m really disappointed.
