FDA Head: ‘Most People Are Going to Get COVID’

With a record number of COVID-19 cases being reported, two top U.S. health officials made a stark prediction on Tuesday: Most Americans eventually will be infected with the virus.
“I think it’s hard to process what’s actually happening right now, which is most people are going to get COVID,” FDA acting Commissioner Janet Woodcock, MD, told the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee, according to The Washington Post.
Woodcock had been asked if the United States needed to change its COVID strategy. She said people need to accept the reality of widespread infection so the nation can focus on maintaining “continuity of operations” in crucial sectors.
“What we need to do is make sure the hospitals can still function, transportation, you know, other essential services are not disrupted while this happens,” she said. “I think after that will be a good time to reassess how we’re approaching this pandemic.”
Anthony Fauci, MD, chief White House medical adviser, said COVID will infect “just about everybody,” according to CNN.
“Omicron, with its extraordinary, unprecedented degree of efficiency of transmissibility, will ultimately find just about everybody,” Fauci said in a virtual fireside chat with the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
“Those who have been vaccinated … and boosted would get exposed. Some, maybe a lot of them, will get infected but will very likely, with some exceptions, do reasonably well in the sense of not having hospitalization and death.”
Fauci had been asked if the pandemic had entered a new phase. He said that might happen when there’s enough community protection and drugs to easily treat severe COVID. “We may be on the threshold of that right now,” he said.
The U.S. reported 1.35 million new COVID-19 cases on Monday, the highest daily total for any country in the world during the pandemic.
The U.S. set the previous record of 1 million cases on Jan. 3. A large number of cases are reported on Mondays because many states don’t provide updates over the weekend.

Can you tell me how I’m supposed to feel about that? I don’t know how I feel. Some part of me feels relief? Like maybe it’s better to just lean in to accept it?

I…. Don’t know. I guess I really do hope that we pivot to focusing on keeping essential services running. It seems like at this point we really don’t have any sort of concerted view on what matters and what doesn’t. But I would really like to see some acknowledgments that keeping food supply chains and medicine intact are pretty high priorities you know?
On a personal level, I don’t know. I’m prone to depression and fatalism as a baseline. I may not be the best to ask then.

At the federal level, all bureaus/divisions/departments/branches have to have Continuancy of Operation plans. We can protect the food chain. You just aren’t going to like those days very much.

Okay but if I can rein us in a bit from Mad Max scenario, I’m not reading that our gov’t is saying we just unmasked and join th surge. If we’ve peaked for this season, that seems like good news?
I honestly just want my kid to be vaccinated. Then I would feel a little less anxious about it all.

Today was the second day of decreasing hospitalizations and 7th day of decreasing positivity rates (not that those mean much) during this wave. We appear to be on the back side of it.
ETA: Interestingly, if so, the peak is only a few days off from last winter’s peak!

This is great and all but like, too little, too late, IMO. The barn door is open and that horse is long gone. (This criticism isn’t aimed at you, it is aimed at the gov’t. This should have happened 4 weeks ago. Why is the gov’t so reactive instead of being proactive?)
Agree, so will there continue to be extreme shortages in pharmacies because the manufacturers will be shifting to gov’t rather than private clients?

I’m also really interested in their use of “every home in the US” vs. “every person in the US”. 4 tests is not very helpful in households with > 4 people… And what about roommate situations? Idk why people should have to share 4 tests with their 2-3 friends who are all leading different lives with different exposures. Hopefully it’s just sloppy wording.
